Has anyone noticed that we haven't actually seen anyone die yet, and there haven't actually been any mentions that anyone has died yet? We've seen they can bail out of their planes.

To highlight that point, we see the guys from the first episode who got shot down reappear in this episode, proving they didn't die.

Does this show have an overall plot? After 5 episodes, I haven't seen anything that would indicate there is a plot thread tying all the episodes together.

Cute Girls Doing Dogfights?

Really the only thing approaching what could have been an ongoing plot point is Pancake Girl's obsession over that one pilot in Ep1 she tried to chase down. Since then... nothing.

Though it'll probably pop up again near the end of the series.

Does anyone else think the dialog in this is rather fast? I've noticed this in previous EP's but this was the first EP where i struggled to keep up with the subtitles, tho it was during Julia's rant so it may have been intentional.

I am constantly having to pause and rewind. I thought it was HIDIVE's subtitle system until I started watching it on Crunchyroll.

Kaguya-sama is the same way because it often has two conversations going on at the same time.

That's the sort of time HIDive's subtitle system has an edge over CR's. Having one character's lines in one colour while the other is in a different colour makes it tonnes easier to keep up with who is talking when they're talking at the same time.

Distinguishing who is saying what isn't the problem, it's having the text stay on the screen long enough.

Crunchyroll does put a dash in front of them or put one conversation at the top of the screen and the other at the bottom.

HIDIVE doesn't do the different colored thing for their apps, and the subtitles are tiny and have no contrast in their apps.

I've basically given up watching subtitled shows from HIDIVE on my big screen TV

Guess the magician is on top when it comes to power levels in the show. Also there's no oceans apparently. Interesting.

Fun eps. Some background on our characters and

...some subtle world building.

The dogfights are always great to watch!

I just binged watched the series too date (episode 5). Here are my feeble thoughts.

I love how the aircraft are all authentically Japanese. All the other aircraft have been documented except for the 2 heavy bombers which are Mitsubishi KI-67 "Peggy" bombers.
I also like that flying is realistically handled from plane startup (you don't just jump in and go) to firing the guns in small bursts rather than holding the trigger down. CGI is acceptable except for Ep. 5 when Kylie (??) landed at the airport and waved so that you had a lot of CGI elements on top of each other. UGH. The world setting seems to be the aftermath of global thermonuclear war. They say there are no more oceans, but there has to be water or, well, everybody dies. So far a solid C+ in my book so far. I will keep watching.

It's always interesting to me seeing how people can have different experiences with the same company. I watch HIDive on my big screen TV as well though through their website via the Chrome browser and have no issues with the subtitles. I wonder what's different about the app that causes such a difference in outcome?

You watch it on your TV through a browser? The Amazon FireTV app has tiny subtitles with no outline for contrast.

They are notorious for completely neglecting the apps.

They put out an app for Apple TV first, which is one of the least used streaming devices. That app doesn't even work anymore because Apple was unhappy with the mature content on HIDIVE.

Then they developed an Xbox App and haven't developed a PS4 app, despite the fact that there are more than twice as many PS4s in the world.

They haven't developed a Roku app, despite the fact that Roku is the most popular streaming device.

My TV is directly connected to my computer so it can be used as a giant monitor.

That really sucks the apps aren't well-maintained.

There are the pirates as well. Specifically, that they're stronger than they should be: Flying planes they shouldn't be, having more numbers than they ought to, and being better pilots than typical. Not to mention that group that shot up the airport from the last episode without doing any raiding, which would be behavior that doesn't make sense for pirates in a resource poor world.

I'm expecting that whole "what are the "pirates" up to?" to be the seasonal arc. And probably ties into the political machinations two episodes have touched on.

I caught up on this and join most of you.

the subtitles go super fast and I sometimes struggle to follow

I still don't see any kind of goal in the story but we had a bit of background lately.

I also think most of charactere are plain. None are really interresting.

I think the deeper plot is buried in the politics, which for me, is harder to follow. Especially when Julia talks/rants as fast as she does. The latest episode was especially rough. So it’s difficult to know where everyone stands, especially when the girls (save for Kylie...to a degree) don’t seem to voice their opinions one way or the other. Heck, they haven’t even really explained the Council.

Still, as a slice of life anime with battles (ala Girls Und Panzer) it’s not bad. I just wish they could make the political intrigue easier to follow. Especially when all the politics center around the existence of the pirate gangs. In that regard I don’t get Julia at all.

So yeah, the world building has not been that great, especially when they’re trying to add messily done political intrigue into the mix. But the combat is excellent, and the girls at least are interesting.
