So... I didn't think it was possible, but the new Xbox One Crunchyroll app is actually worse then the previous version. It seems like an attempt to mimic Netflix's layout, but there a couple pretty serious issues for me...

The biggest and most seriously annoying is that the (already hard to identify) progress bar that showed you had actually watched a show... seems to be nonexistent now. I can't tell whats been watched at all any more.

My queue is located in the menu... I don't understand why video streaming developers don't want to put the thing you want most, one or two levels deep... *sigh*. Maybe its just what I want most... but I would think you'd want it more front and center. The last version of the app annoyingly didn't have the queue selected first, but at least it was visible from the landing page.

Fast Forward functions have gotten less verbose, harder to control, and seem to loop you back to the beginning of the episode if you accidentally forward past the end of the video.

I'm sure theres more but those are the things that jumped out at me as frustrating.

This is all just my opinion, but anyone else annoyed at all this?

Yeah, it seems to be a case of one step forward, two steps back.

Like, you can remove items from your queue through the app now! Which is great, but for some reason they've made it easier to do that than to actually play the next episode of a queued show - to play an episode you need to hit A, which takes you to the show page, and then play from there, vs just hitting X which instantly removes a show from your queue with no confirmation.

Now, I don't know how the Crunchyroll devs use the app, but personally, I want to play the next episode of a queued show, oh, around 12-24x more often than I want to remove a show from the queue, so I'm not sure why the more frequent action is more difficult than the less frequent one.

It would make far more sense for A to just play the next episode, and X to open the show page, where there's a giant "Remove from queue" button. I'd happily take a few extra button presses to remove from queue in exchange for being able to just play an episode directly from the queue. If they're going to stick with the current design, at least put a confirmation in (or make it so you need to hold the button) so you can't accidentally remove a show from your queue so easily.

Also, autoplay seems kinda broken. I've seen it kick in once so far, but most of the time the video just stops, on a black screen, and I had to manually back out to play the next episode.

And while you can remove items from the queue now, which is a step up from the old app, you still can't re-order them without going to the website. I'd suggest matching the behaviour for tiles on the Xbox home page, and let you hit the View button to re-order items.

And yeah, the video controls are worse than before, only letting you skip in 30s increments, and if you overtake the stream (skip past the filled-in part of the bar), it breaks the player completely.

Although I just discovered that if you have a media remote, you can fast-forward (and it'll literally just play the video faster, complete with sped-up, choppy audio), although that also tends to break the player at times, and you still can't go past the portion that's already been streamed in.

I can’t install the update, and just recently it showed that the app isn’t installed at all

If crunchyroll is updating their app, then they need to make sure that it works.

I've been experiencing the same issues with the new app.

On top of that, I'm not a very fast reader, so I rely heavily on the: Pause, Rewind, and Play buttons.
Without them, I wouldn't be able to enjoy reading and watching the shows on Crunchroll.

This update has made it impossible to do that with enjoyment. When you pause the playback to read the subtitles, instead of giving you an unobstructed view of the paused image like the previous version used to, it immediately pauses the image with an information pause screen completely blocks the text. Which forces you to toggle it off, and 50 percent of the time, when you try to toggle it off, it exits you out of playing the video, forcing you to reload from the beginning.

Because of this, a 25 minute episode that usually takes me between 35 to 45 minutes for me to watch takes 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes to watch. This is completely unacceptable.

They should have tested this to make sure it worked correctly. Especially for people like me who have difficulty reading quickly.

They should have left the controls and pause screen the way it used to be!
Where when you pause the playback, you get an unobstructed view of the image, so you can easily read the subtitles, and quickly resume playback without obstructing the view. And if you want the information paused screen to pop up, you toggled it by pressing up or down on the controls like it used to work.

instead, anytime you get the play, pause, or rewind to work (with out getting kicked form playback) it block the bottom of the screen where the subtitles are. I have to ask, did anyone at Crunchroll actually test this out to make sure it works and makes senses for the services they are running?

Or do they just want to be a service like Netflix?
because most of the anime on Netflix are dubbed, and that's not why I use Crunchroll.

And to be honest, I agree, with a few of the other people, the app wasn't broken to begin with, it just needed a little work to improve it.

Yeah they've really screwed the pooch on this one. They took the worst parts of their other clients like Apple TV and added them to Xbox.

Issues I have, and I see some of you also have but I'll repeat and add my own.

Play/pause etc are hands down WAY too BIG stupidly big, KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID "K.I.S.S." subtitles being impossible to view by it and that it that shows up as soon as you play an episode, rather than say showing up only when you say want it to or move the thumbstick hit a button or something? Take notes from the old version don't reinvent the wheel.

Not being able to see progress?! WTF? I have to look at the updated list just to see what the hell I haven't actually watched.

Play when you hit enter. Put the remove from the queue on a submenu that only comes up if you say hit x for more options, hit A to play. They should take some hits from Funainimation because theirs is pretty crappy but it isn't as bad as this. I don't mind skip forward but it shouldn't be more than 15seconds, not 30seconds and there should still be a fast forward or better yet a Hulu style scroll forward/back.

Add a "move to front" option.

I just turned it on to catch up on my weekend shows. I hate the new app. The look is too busy on the screen, with too many shows either showing previews, or cut off from the top. My biggest problem with it so far is that there is no progress bar. If I'm trying to catch up on shows, I need to know which ones I've already watched! I shouldn't have to go to the website for that. I haven't tried the fast forward/rewind yet, but going from other comments, when I do try to use it, I have a feeling it's not going to go over well. I had no problem with the other one. Why did they change it and make it worse?

The option to view your history is nonexistent, I dont like the layout, I like the option to remove someth ik g from the queue but within seconds I saw how easy it was to accidentally remove a show from the queue -__-. Also I see no option to restart video from the beginning

I agree with to op,
The lack of progress bar on menu to Identify updated and viewed shows is a big issue for me.
The lack of Queue on main screen is a minor annoyance. But it is a little quicker to get to then before.
It does look like they copied netflix very bad menu design.

But on a plus side I have not had any buffering issues that were so prevalent on the previous version.

Anyone else having issues with dubbed content? I watch a mixture of subbed and dubbed but dubbed isn't streaming on the xbox app. It seems to load to a black screen, yet subtitled content loads no problem! Also my dubbed shows that ive watched via browser don't appear in my queue!

Anyone have an issue with their premium service being downgraded to free? This has happened to me and I have been email Crunchyroll everyday for the past week with ZERO responses. Just curious if anyone else is experiencing any similar? Also add note if they don’t respond anyone no of another anime streaming service?
