Since the graduation of the senior members of the club, Takezou ends up being the sole member of the "Koto" (traditional Japanese string instrument) club. Now that the new school year has begun, Takezou will have to seek out new members into the club, or the club will become terminated. Episode 1

This show didn't waste any time in getting down and dirty as Chika has a checkered past. Or at least that's what it looks like from the surface as he's in the doghouse of the law after vandalizing his grandfather's koto shop when it was actually somebody else pretending to be him doing it. And then there's Takezo, who is the only remaining member of the Koto Club after everybody else graduates making him the de facto president, and he has quite a tall task on his hands if he wants to keep the club running. Pretty interesting setup there as these two figure to have quite an odd relationship with koto music as the sounds from that instrument are supposed to be serene, but the ones playing it are anything but.

I was surprised how quick we got over Chika's backstory and kind of resolved it. I was expecting that to be like an another episode or two. Not complaining, I do look forward to seeing the other members and having the whole club interact. It seems like each of them have some type of issue so that should be interesting.

I heard that this is 2-cour. I can't wait to hear they play the koto.

I rather enjoyed this. There was some interesting humor in spots, and I was glad that the whole "bad guy" misunderstanding was wrapped up in the first episode and not dragged out. Since it was obvious plotwise that the guy was misunderstood it could easily have become tiresome to watch for the viewer. I look forward to seeing where these characters go from here.

Though I do have a sneaking suspicion that the anime may have something to do with promoting a traditional Japanese art to a young audience and making it seem cool. But what do I care if the story is good, and the music is too? Besides I'm not even against the idea when it comes to it...

I really enjoyed this one, and look forward to the next episode. I'm glad Chika's backstory kind of got resolved. Was it just me or was that teacher a real jerk? Assuming he wrecked the club room, because he already had him pegged as guilty for wrecking his grandfather's place. I also liked hearing his reason for wanting to join the club. I wonder if that's the last we'll hear of his backstory. We haven't heard him play yet, so I wonder if he's any good. I look forward to seeing some new members join their club, and seeing how it goes from there.

Split-cour. There's a season gap for this.

Anyways, I've read the manga with 70+ ongoing chapters. Seems they picked the right dramatic mood for the show so far with koto themes. I'm interested to see how far they'll develop the main characters since that's an important part of the series.

can be streamed on Hulu if anyone has this. it's not all that bad, I have no clue what I'm wondering into, this season just felt like picking up and/or watching anything, it's one of those seasons I suppose. it seems interesting, it's a different telling from what I'm use to. the whole traditional things getting swallowed up in the modern world and trying to maintain traditional.

Episode 2

That club recruitment drive was a disaster with Takezo sounding off, all while Chika got agitated when those girls behind him were chatting instead of listening to the performance. But they did get a koto prodigy to join in Hozuki. She's got a dual personality as she wants to craft a creative story, and she especially shows her nasty side towards those who don't take care of instruments. She wants to work a miracle to bring this struggling club to the top at the nationals. Those light music guys are jerks, and they ought to listen to Hozuki's advice and get better before bragging about how they rule and kotos drool. Pretty nice way to bring Hozuki into the fold as things are looking up even if there is still a lot of baggage to sort out.

I guess that would be an interesting story of a pro. Be a semi-pro in high school and bring a group of amateurs to first place of Nationals. Will that happen? Eh maybe, but I'm sure there will be some hurdles to get there. I'm kind of surprised how quick were getting club members. 3 right now and it seems like 3 will be joining next time. Let's see where we go from here.

E2

Catching up, and I'm enjoying this anime, for biased reasons - I've heard one being played directly from a family friend's daughter, and it's as asia-sounding as you can imagine.

It feels this anime moves at a fairly fast pace, with conflicts quickly resolved, which can be too convenient, but I guess it's better than it being dragged out and muddying the plot.

I hope Chika mellows out a little with time, as the tsun dial is a bit too high.
Strangely enough, I like Hozuki's real personality, and just waiting for the dere to blossom.

Ep 2

Never heard a koto before, but it was super pretty when Hozuki played it. I would really enjoy some performances in the future once the club gets some members. It looks like an instrument that can be played with several people per each koto which is cool.

Hozuki had a cool reason to join the club, at first. I was sold when she lied about wanting to play for fun because she's only ever played for adults and never really with friends. Turns out the truth, that she wants to bring an obscure club to nationals and win first place, is even better. Solid character already and she may come off cold but her goals are definitely in alignment with the group so it should all work out. I would be pleased if the rest of the group ends up as interesting as Hozuki.
