So...was this entire episode meant to introduce that girl as a new character, or is she a one hit wonder and this was just more fuel to hate the Vikings and show how unforgiving the world is?

I'm not sure why they keep talking about keeping the word from getting out...why do they care? No one has been able to touch them so far...seems more like they just enjoy murder.

I think it was to remind us of the brutality of Askeladd, since the last few episodes hes become likeable.

I hope there's more to it than that....because we've already seen his troupe murder and rape at least 3 villages before this. It seems dedicating an entire episode to it while highlighting that girl is just gratuitous.

Thorfinn, the supposed main character has just become a background character at this point. After all of the stuff Thors taught him early in the show, I'd at least like to see some reaction by him to all this wanton murder.

I don't remember exactly, but was that ring worn by Thors? If so, that could be what connects Thorfinn to her and maybe wakes him up from the nightmare that he's been living in. Maybe combined with that priest's view of Thorfinn's father as well. If that's not the case, it definitely seems like a lot of time building up a character that isn't going to play a role.

That would be a hell of a coincidence for a ring worn by Thors who died thousands of miles away to end up in the middle of England to be stolen by a girl that was affected by Thorfinn's group.

That was probably one of the most realistic and emotional episode I've seen from Vinland Saga so far.

Such a powerful epsiode.

Best episode of the Fall season. I'm calling it.
Brutal and profound. With an intro like that I knew it was gonna be awesome.

I won't post any specific spoilers, obviously, but I will assure you that the girl's survival does affect the story going forward.

I don't fault anyone for whom this episode was too much. 'Darkness induced audience apathy' is absolutely a real thing, and as cool as it can be to see a time period's morals reflected perfectly within art, there's no denying that giving an audience no one they can earnestly root for can make it hard for some people to stay invested.

That said, I actually really liked this episode. It was well directed, had a clear thematic statement it wanted to make, and portrayed the brutality of the Norman invasion in as tasteful a manner as it's possible to do so. I already knew what was going to happen, and I was still caught off guard by it... though I wish the anime had come up with a solution for the language thing. Having japanese represent English, Old Norse, French, and Welsh makes it hard to tell which it's supposed to be sometimes.

Not Normans yet....well what we know as the French Normans...that's about 50 years from this period.

I don't so much have a problem with the fact that the show is depicting stuff like this, but this is at least the 3rd, if not 4th time, they've depicted Askelaad's crew murdering an entire village. This was the most "artisitc" portrayal of it, but eventually it gets gratuitous.

I think it would have had more impact, and served to get its point across better if this was the first portrayal of it. Since this was about the 3rd or 4th time though, when Askelaad said "we will kill them all", most of the audience was probably thinking "yeah of course they will, they murdered everyone in the last 3 villages they plundered as well.

The language thing is indeed annoying... having everyone sound the same just makes it feel off.

That family might as well have had a sign saying "We all die" over their front door. Honestly it was harder for me to watch them being a happy family at dinner than watching the actual killing, because there was just no doubt as to what their fate was going to be.

Also the priest is just depressing AF. I guess he's supposed to represent how God doesn't give a furry rat's ass what happens in the human world, which is fine, but damn if I was there I'd prolly poison his wine just 'cos he's such a drag.

I don't follow this line of thought. The only guy who tried to warn the village and save their lives deserves to die?
