Hello everyone.

As the title says i'm after an intelligent anime series recommendation. I Loved Physcho Pass, ghost in the shell, and steins gate, all series that are sci fi, thoughtful series. 91 days I really liked too.

So i'm looking for recommendations like these shows that are about story, based around science if possible, but a bit more serious themes than the happy go lucky anime's.

Any recommendations like those that I can watch on crucnchyroll?

I definitely recommend "Parasyte". Its also sci fi and the character development and plot require the viewer to use the old noggin.

Not sure if intelligent but it made me think and I'm always looking back to it: Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

I recommend Hozuki's Coolheadedness. (Crunchyroll has it available)

After watching all of it, you will definitely leave with a much stronger understanding of Japanese and Chinese legends, yokai, lore, folktales, spirituality and their concepts of the afterlife.

You will start seeing things in other anime that you had not noticed before.
For example; the little girl in One Piece that can pinch off her cheeks to make dumplings which tame animals is a reference to Japanese folklore that is mentioned in passing in one episode.

To sum up the premise simply, it's Japanese "Fractured Fairy Tales." It follows a 2 story per episode format. However, the pacing is well done and unhurried so each episode feels much longer due to the amount of well conveyed content.

It's a smart comedy in that the many of the jokes are fresh and aren't just rehashed tropes. As such, many of the jokes will take you by surprise.

Lastly much of the artwork in the anime follow traditional Japanese aesthetics

Here's an example of one of the reoccurring characters from Hozuki's Coolheadedness.

Bokurano - It's thought-provoking, although it can also be quite depressing.

Madoka Magica - No, really. It's a psychological drama, and it has some science fiction elements. It's not the cute and fluffy show that it seems to be on the cover.

Kado: the Right Answer - It's an interesting plot... up until the end (sigh). But the story is unusual and worth watching for the most part.

Planet With - It looks goofy, but don't underestimate it. It was very popular around here during its run, for good reason.

Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet: Beautiful and a bit sad.

Eve no Jikan: Short well done Sci Fi series.

Dennou Coil: Much more to it than there first appears.

Made in Abyss: (This one straddles the line between sci-fi and fantasy. Don't let the character designs fool you. This one is dark and mature.)

Kino's Journey: This is another philosophical title that is sci-fi edging into fantasy territory.

Parasyte: As others have pointed out, it's a very good sci-fi horror.

Serial Experiments Lain: I'll second this one as well. It's a good mind fuck style sci fi show.

Girl's Last Tour: A slightly surreal, beautiful meditation on life and the end of all things. Read the manga afterwards to finish the story.

Cowboy Bebop: If you somehow haven't seen it, fix that. Mature action sci fi show about some misfit bounty hunters in a ruined future.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou: A beautiful iyashikei sci fi story set in a slightly surreal doomed world.

Shinsekai yori: This ones another dark and mature look into a distopian future.

Shelter: A touching single episode animated short.

Hinamatsuri: It's hilarious.

Summer Wars: Let's end this list with a solid movie.

Cowboy Bebop
Perfect Blue
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Grave of the Fireflies
Ghost in the Shell (The first one and Stand Alone Complex)
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

All some of my favorites when talking about anime that people who prefer more complex stories would enjoy. These can get very dark and tragic, but they tell compelling stories are definitely worth a watch.
