Uhhh wasn't this already a show called Kancolle?

Oh no they are quite different

AZ is a cheap Chinese rip off of KC see the difference?

Azur Lane is not a knock off considering KanColle is a Jap only slant on things (it's the pro Abe faction conservative viewpoint) You'd be hard pressed to find KanColle remotely making their ship girls even remotely evil considering what they're based on (IJN glorified much?)

If you're looking purely at a political standpoint, Azur Lane would of course be popular outside of Japan. It's gaining popularity within Japan as well when there's the internet telling Japanese students to stop reading Jap propaganda regarding WW2....

For that first encounter, all I could think of is your team of R's and SR's going against a team of SSR's, and then you finally pull your UR's.

I knew nothing about any of this going in so my reaction while watching this was: WTF am I watching?

I love all the cutsie anime girl designs... but then they have all these miniature battleship pieces stuck all over them?

I feel like I now have a deeper understanding of Vegeta's reaction to Broly in the TFS, DBZA version of the Broly movie.

So cool..... but..... So lame....

This gave me Kantai Collection vibes but I think it can stand out on its own as a show.

A lot of characters introduced so far already though. I hope I can keep up with them.

If you aren't familiar with Azur Lane than I can see how this was confusing with all the characters appearing. I thought this episode was alright, Kaga got fucked up (just like in real life). It's interesting that there making the Japanese the antagonist (probably until the sirens get out of hand), but since this game originated out of China it shouldn't be too surprising. The action was fine, OST was pretty solid, and not as much CGI as thought there would be. Enterprise too strong.

Seems like a lot of ships will make cameos so I'm hoping too see my girl Baltimore.

Azur Lane is a cross between Strike Witches and Kan Coll. Finding out it's a Chinese anime means that it is not surprising that the Japanese are evil. If anybody has a good reason to hate Japan it is the Chinese.

Watched the first episode again. They don't really set up the war mongering aspect of the Crimson Axis well. Sure, they want to use the Siren's tech against them (the Sirens), but they don't really explain why the Crimson Axis want to destroy Azur Lane. I'm also still confused by Unicorn's stuffed animal and Kaga's giant fox demon thing. I'm fairly confident those are not a part of the established canon (as far as the game itself is concerned).

I really do hope it puts more effort into explaining Crimson Axis' "rehabilitation" from the game. Are the enemy ships you get in the game the same ship as the one you fight, or is it some kind of weird reincarnation thing and they are not the same ship. The same would go for ships like Hood or Yorktown.

Either way, hope they ramp up the lore. Especially if this is going to be considered canon alongside the game.

It's still a knockoff, however. Changing the bias of the story, is like saying every isekai is wholly original, simply because the intro premise differs.

But no matter.

Calling every isekai a knock off is kinda pushing it. The base premise does not make the entire product, and expecting total originality out of anything these days is quite insane. Rant ahoy!

In any case, as for discussing the actual anime, three seconds of Kent was all I need to be completely satisfied.

I feel like this will be a series where I'll quietly watch and wonder to myself what it going on while the rest of this fandom discusses and debates.

Oh well. I liked the action and soundtrack so that's certainly a plus.

I don't know why this felt more High School Fleet than KanColle or even Strike Witches to me but it wasn't a good feeling. It was fun but something was just a bit off or missing for me.

Well that was interesting whether you hated it or loved it. Very difficult to gauge where this show is going just from that alone, so it's better to avoid overthinking what will unfold next and just let it happen. I'd classify this as a rough start for sure. There tons of things about it that stood out. The animation was interesting in a creative way, the art is wonderful but may be borderline irritating to the eyes? It's almost excessively bright. The voice acting seems to be on the path for success, I bet they'll develop the characters well. Apart from that it has a lot to prove still.

I did get Kancolle vibes once the action started but by the end I kind of felt like something was missing. The visuals are nice and all but I feel like it's too soon to just jump into plot when the characters are quite undeveloped, it feels pointless even though it does seem like the show as a whole is perfectly set up. Then again tons of shows do this rushed intro when they try to get mass information to the audience so they can get it over and get to the good stuff. Based on that I feel the show will be surprisingly battle oriented, considering they squeezed one into the first episode expect a lot of it consistently.

I'm not sold on this yet and will be looking forward to how they reinvent warmongering each episode.

I do wonder though....is Laffey literally diabetes personified??

Hmm not really sure at all where I land on this one. My first actual exposure to Azure Lane outside of seeing the art everywhere and I'm a bit torn. The whole boat girl thing is exceedingly stupid (in this IP and others) and it really doesn't look any better "in motion" than it does in the static art. Plus, I could definitely do without the overabundance of loli characters. But, that said, I do still quite like the art and general character designs here. And the action, if you can look beyond the boat girl stupidity, is pretty well composed. Laffey's also just a really fun character.

Not sure if the good will be enough to overcome the bad in the long run but I'll at least give it a little longer.
