This season looked to have quite a few watchable anime, but none that were gems. I think I may have finally found a gem.

You know I used to bitch about how Amazon gets so few anime, but I have to admit the ones they do get tend to be cream of the crop. Every season at least one of my top shows is on there.

Great start, I love the style of the opening scene in episode one and the atmosphere in general and as many others I'm glad it's not a heavily censored TV anime. The soundtrack is pretty good as well. The only thing that bothered me was that episode 2 felt a little bit rushed. I'm not familiar with the source material so I'm not sure whether they skipped something or not but it did feel like the episode should've been at least 5-10 minutes longer than it was (everything seemed to be happening just a little bit too fast).

Watched the third episode. Not keen on the action scenes. The quick cuts makes it hard to follow...

I liked episode 3 even thought I thought it was a bit heavy handed. The show reminds me a bit of Dororo, though not quite as good. I'm still liking it though.

Episode 3

Here comes Makie, and she's caught between a rock and a hard place as she's taking up the sword, but is being told to be a prostitute. She's quite a threat with the sword as she puts that on display by carving up Manji that would kill anybody else much to Manji's chagrin. But once Rin steps in, that's when Makie finally understands what she needs to do, and that is to ditch the Itto-ryu for good and carve her own path. That was great to see that Makie is someone who had been a prisoner of her surrounding environment, but through blood shed and her encounter with Manji that she is seeing things differently. Great stuff once again as the manga really nails it with the character development, and it comes through here with this prostitute taking charge of her own destiny.

I like how here we are on episode 3 and we already have the whole immortal super swordsman power fantasy turned on it's ear where as a typical shounen would have just run with the whole unstoppable OP MC bit for 300 episodes strait. The protagonist even with his crazy wolverine like regeneration isn't the best swordsman in the land. He gets literally taken apart by a woman and it's ugly.

Serious question:

What's the difference between this series and the one that came out about ten years ago? Is this series more faithful to the manga or something?

The reboot will be a complete adaptation.

Hmm that was kind of difficult to follow the plot and the action, so she chops her hair and that makes her more skillful? I really didn't get Makie's story at all.

No, she chopped her hair showing her resolve not to go back to prostitution. After she did it, the guys who were trying to take her back to the whore house said cutting her hair off was reducing her worth as a prostitute. The reason she got her butt kicked at the beginning was because she didn't have the resolve to fight. She was still mulling over the words of the other Geisha, that it was better to be a prostitute than a swordswoman. After talking to the guy who bought her out of prostitution, and being pursued by the guys who were going to take her back to be a prostitute, she resolved to be a swordswoman.

edit I went and looked up the manga...and they left a lot of her story out...maybe they will show more later

Another beautiful episode.
The OST is so good. I love the tragic tone of this.
