The light novel series '86' is getting an anime adaptation.

Plot Summary

The Republic of San Magnolia.

For a long time, this country has been besieged by its neighbor, the Empire, which created a series of unmanned military vehicles called the Legion. In response to the threat, the Republic successfully completes the development of similar technology and fights off the enemy's attack, having managed to do so without casualties. But this is the official version. In fact, there were victims. Outside of 85 districts of the Republic, there was actually another one—"the non-existent 86th district." It was there that day and night continued the battles in which young men and women, known as Eighty-Sixers, participated—they fought in drones...

Shinn directs the actions of a detachment of young Eighty-Sixers while on the battlefield. Lena is a "handler" who commands the detachment from the remote rear with the help of special communication.

The tragic struggle of these two begins!

they fought in drones...

"drones" are unmanned... If a person is in there, by definition it's not a drone.

in "droves" maybe, meaning there were lots of them fighting.

or perhaps not "in" drones but "with" drones.

Edit: Stripped of their humanity they "become" drones.

... you've never read the books, have you? It's no different than the Chinese government telling their citizens that Tiananmen Square incident did not happen. I think that's the best analogy I can come up with. Also, Stark700, please refer to the localized works and not unofficial fansubs.

A War Without Casualties The Republic of San Magnolia has long been under attack from the neighboring Giadian Empire's army of unmanned drones known as the Legion. After years of painstaking research, the Republic finally developed autonomous drones of their own, turning the one-sided struggle into a war without casualties-or at least, that's what the government claims. In truth, there is no such thing as a bloodless war. Beyond the fortified walls protecting the eighty-five Republic territories lies the "nonexistent" Eighty-Sixth Sector. The young men and women of this forsaken land are branded the Eighty-Six and, stripped of their humanity, pilot the "unmanned" weapons into battle...

A-1 Pictures is producing the anime.

I actuallly have some grave reservation about A-1 animating this. I feel like Wit Studio (Attack on Titan), Madhouse or even Production IG would honor the story a lot more faithfully than A-1 Pcitures, who tend to self censor, tone down and "fan service" serious stories. There are atrocities (genocide), horrors of war and psychological trauma throughout the story (think Holocaust), and I am not totally on board with this studio choice.

The story is dark and heavy, and I feel that the audience should be in the adult category, due to the topics involved. Yes, the story does follow these teenagers, but ultimately, the years (timeline) will pass and they transition into young adults.

Now we just need 69, 420, and 666; then we'll have the complete 4 horsemen of funny numbers as animes.

A-1 has done some grim stuff too. Gate had genocide, racism, murder, slave abuse.
Erased was pretty heavy with child abuse
Record of Grancrest War had some grim stuff

After all these years the only names they can come up with for countries is "the Empire" and "the Repubic" ?
The plot is as predictable as an American sitcom. Waste of money and time.
