I'm assuming Magic Pixie Dream Girl.

As per wikipedia (and basically the definition I followed when I mentioned the term earlier in this thread):
the MPDG "exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.

That sounds like Maetel. Haru is not even near Maetel.

Eh, saying Haru is nothing like that is a pretty big stretch. She essentially comes out of nowhere into Rikuo's life and has pretty much instant romantic interest in him and him alone for no real reason. Rikuo is a down on his luck character who, while not a bad guy, is just sort of lost in his day to day. Haru seems to live as if she is part of a different much more carefree world than anyone else. Haru's apparent existence is just to basically lift Rikuo out of his doldrums and show him he can be more than he is. Etc.

Haru is pretty clearly angled towards being a Manic Pixie Dream Girl style character but, as I praised the show for, it actually doesn't just treat her as one. We do eventually get to see that everything isn't perfect for her and she's not living in some magical faerie land that exists out of real world place/time She has her own wants and motivations that actually matter to the story. She ends up not just existing to lift Rikuo but, if you watch a fairly large chunk of the beginning of the season you'd be forgiven for thinking she is.

Haru is the "mystery girl". I'm not in disagree with your opinion with Haru's rol.
But I will restrain myself from the use of MPDG term, because I don't get it. Seems to be made only for one movie.
Also that wikipedia article is heavily vandalised

About 4th for me, of the new shows. #1 is Kakushigoto, followed by Villainess and "Wave, Listen to Me!".

The last episode is a bit of a contrast, in terms of what all happens, compared to the pace of previous episodes. But on the flip side, I'm not sure if dragging it out would necessarily have helped. I mean, it has been obvious for a while that the college crush relationship wasn't going to work, and that Rikuo could feel that, even if he didn't fully acknowledge/act on that. And I wouldn't really be interested in seeing him mope for a bit before he decides to go after Haru. And I cannot see it playing out in a way that would give me what I really want... lots more time with Haru.

Really, what bothered me more is his poor confession. Haru is right to score it low and demand a redo. I mean, when he says that worst girl dumped him, I wanted to smack him. It was a break up, more than a dumping. And at worst, a mutual decision to break up, but given that he started the conversation, you could make a case that he broke up with her. And that combined with the "back up" thing... Not a good combo.

So maybe a little rushed, but not to such a degree that I'd have wanted another episode. Just like 5 minutes longer on this one.

Back up relationships never work (from what I've seen) you want someone who always had you no 1.

Yeah, it seems like the thing that would eat away at you. You'd need to be some degree of stalker crazy for it not to, at least it would seem to me. But I think that situation applies more if person A rejects you and you turn to B, and not so much if you realize that you're not interested in A anymore, and are in B.

And that said, I don't think he ever thought of her as the back up option. If I recall correctly, she is the one who brought that up way earlier, saying she was fine with being that. For his part, he mostly ignored her and her feelings. Only later, when he knew, even if he wasn't willing to admit it, that the college crush thing wasn't going to work out, did he somewhat act with her in mind. And I think at that point, Haru's star was rising, but that was also not something he was willing to admit to himself yet, because college crush. That Haru star rising aspect was something the show could have spent a bit more time on. But I digress.

Short of it, Haru wasn't a back up plan, but rather, the other girl was a daydream he hadn't awoken from yet.

That didn't feel rushed to me. It did feel fast, but not rushed. Hopefully that makes sense.

I do think the ending would have had more impact if they'd done more to give us an idea about how he felt about Haru. Perhaps Rikuo being preoccupied with thoughts of her even while he was with Shinako, bringing her up in conversation a lot, that sort of thing.

I suppose its possible that one of the reasons he treated Haru poorly sometimes was because he resented her. He resented that he had feelings for her and not Shinako, who was the one he felt he was supposed to be having the relationship with. That could have been interesting for them to explore and might have helped that parts where this series fell flat.

Rou is annoying, but I don't hate him the way others here do. Shinako is such a stick in the mud that she needs someone to push her, like she said herself. If she's willing to be open about a relationship with him while she wasn't with Rikuo that's a pretty strong indicator that she feels a stronger connection to him. And, I don't see her telling people that she's dating a guy in college to be embarrassing. She just got out of college herself not that long ago.

This show started well, then ended well, but lost its footing for a while in the middle. I'd rate this fourth or fifth of the shows I watched this season. Its certainly behind Bookworm, easily the best of the season imo, and behind Gleipnir and Princess Connect too. I guess if I had to I'd put it slightly ahead of anything else, Tsugumomo probably being the next closest show. I can't even count Olympia Kyklos because it belongs in a category all its own.

Dang, I spent more time than I wanted to writing this.
