For comparison

Yes, but what year were those made?

Well, the original sold from '79 to '81 so hardly vintage in the 90's but the point for me is more that the image is iconic and represent the idea of a portable tape player.

But I do get Hoofan's point that the model itself might be considered old, although they were built to last so it's not like they'd disappeared by the time this show is set in.

Sing "Yesterday" To Me is great. It gives me that mid 2000's Anime vibe like Welcome to the NHK and Beck.

What did I miss all these years? "LAWL"

I'll take anime Haru thanks

In a positive sense? (you'll have to forgive me, I'm a relative newcomer to manga) If so, that's probably why it took the author 18 years to complete 11 volumes.....

And I'll take anime Haru also---along with the other characters. Really like the character design updates for the show.

Nope, it looks to be pretty rushed.

The contrast with the care taken over expressions, mannerisms and consistency in the anime is quite stark.

Episode 4

Last time Shinako was featured, a painful secret was revealed in that she was in love with Rou's older brother Yuu who tragically passed away six years ago back in her hometown of Kanazawa. That's being expanded upon here as Rou was jealous of how he was getting more love and attention, but he was very close to him. Shinako is clearing the air that her move to Tokyo was not about forgetting Yuu, but about forgetting that he's dead. Pretty much this episode is all about moving on as while Shinako has been running away from the fact that Yuu is dead, it has been wearing on her, while Rou needs to stop trying to feel obligated to filling his big brother's shoes. That was nice to see that Shinako and Rou are finally facing reality rather than running away from it as those two look destined to become a couple and while he won't replace Yuu, Rou should be able to fill in a huge part of the gap.

Haru seems to have moved on from her "mysterious girl" phase after the end of last episode and isn't wearing all black anymore.

Honestly Rou is the one of the four mains I relate to the least. He just seems petulant and his internal conflict clichéd. But this episode did a good job of fleshing him out and making him realize he could separate his artistic ambition from his feelings for Shinako.

The animation remains strong in the key moments, but it took a step backward in other places.

8/10 this week.

Gah, Shinako still clinging on; they gotta compete with dead perfection.

And Rou is surprisingly mature in his reflections, but I'm just not really interested in this spare tyre.

“As the River Flows, Shinako Returns Home”

Is that the correct title?

Rou is honestly the worst thing about this anime. Nothing about him is relatable besides maaaybe having a bit of jealousy towards your big bro. But to think things are ever realistic enough that you'd end up getting with a female that's older than you and loved your brother as they do is laughably foolish. I'm sure I can make a safe bet that less than 1% of romances(ANYWHERE)have come to fruition with a plot like this.

I'm going to be pissed if Haru and Rou end up getting together, Rou honestly doesn't add anything major to this anime at all imo. He honestly seems like a plot device purely for Haru to end up with if things go south.

Wow Rou got brother zoned twice, looks like he's got no chance with her. But man this show is lowkey relatable

That final scene with Shinako... Yeah she clearly isn't still ready to let go of Yuu-kun's memories. But she can't be like this forever so I'm interested to see how she'll even get over him.

The time period thing is interesting to me as I really didn't pick up on it at all until they showed the rotary phone. The story and characters do feel largely timeless so I just didn't really consider that the story wasn't taking place in modern day.

That's my worry as well. I actually don't hate Rou. Or, more specifically, I don't hate him as a character though I'd probably want to punch him in the face in real life. But it does feel like they are trying to at least play at him and Haru ending up together and I can't say I'm a fan of that.

The animation in this has been amazing, it may look kinda "sloppy" and there isn't much action but every single frame of the characters' faces is drawn so well. I love the attention to detail.
