Huh? 99.999% of Blurays/DVDs they release have the Japanese version with subtitles. If the stuff streaming on their website is dub only, that's Crunchyroll's fault due to the way the contract they had 3 years ago was written

Was the translation of the calligraphy supposed to be deliberately off, or is that a real proverb?

It's a real proverb. 磨穿鉄硯 (ませんてっけん) massentekken

There are many proverbs expressed with just "main" kanji that go into them. So this doesn't literally make a Japanese word or sentence, but basically a contraction of a longer phrase containing these four characters.

Many times these are taken from what's believed are ancient Chinese proverbs and adapted.

The imagery is an ancient scholar that reads and writes so much in ink paintbrushes they wear out even a metal inkstone.

President googled it and got the gist of the saying, which describes its use being about studying. Used here apparently as a positive statement of support for one's studies, showing dedication.

Thanks marklebid! I watched the episode again today and it made more sense that it was an actual proverb. The subs are so rapid-fire that my brain could only process so much the first time around...

what are people's thoughts on the season 2 OP? Season 1's OP was one of my favorites last year. I think eason 2 has a pretty strong one, I liked how it's like it's own little mini episode. But I also think Season 1 had the catchier song.

I was aiming to talk about this anyway.

First, as songs, Love Dramatic was more catchy. While parts of it are great, if I can make an admittedly silly criticism with music, the full version is really repetitive - almost annoyingly so. The 2nd verse and chorus sounds nearly identical outside of lyrics, and my Japanese understanding is poor as is. Its dramatic shifts work against its typical music structure in my opinion. Daddy Daddy Do while not as dramatic, it maintains that smooth class. It's the superior song.

As openings, Love Dramatic isn't fully played, so it doesn't suffer from my complaints. The dramatic points sell its artistic visuals really well. The charmingly two-faced nature being revealed by our leads, the song dramatically slows as our king and queen find each other's weak points before Chika and Ishigami stack the deck against them as trump cards, it's great! They redouble their efforts pulling everything out of their arsenal... before Chika dances over all of it in jubilee.

I can appreciate an extra story told in the opening. Konosuba season 2 did it amazingly. I think its characters might also lend better to silence, and its setting does to flash. If given the choice between the two, I say leave the stories to the runtime. I'll take the poetic flair. It did so well for Kaguya-sama: Love is War.

The openings as songs:

Good second episode though I'm still not used to the change in "war" tactics and them almost being openly affectionate to each other.

I don't know of a single Funimation release that is dub only, what shows are you referring to?

You say that, but it appears you are, at the same time, supporting CR's shitty business model.

Episode 3

Miyuki is so into astronomy that he wants to go to the moon someday. And coincidentally Kaguya is by his side to hear the story of Princess Kaguya to try one-up her, but it all backfires. Then Miyuki's term as the president ends as the job is taxing and he already has the letter of recommendation. With Miyuki no longer president, Kaguya needs to call him something else. But Miyuki changed his mind and applied for re-election, so he's back to being president. Miyuki got some great focus here as he has been played for a fool for most of the series, but for a change the roles are reversed.

Chika came prepared with those bunny ears lol

Looks like we got the moongazing episode. The jacket lending scene was gold though for Kaguya. Both she and Miyuki sold their dialogues so well. Relieving the memories of the student council together is also fun.

Chika's tears though...

I hope we get another special ED this season.

Another fantastic episode.

Can anyone explain what was going on with Ishigami and the reveal of the secret basement/dungeon/staircase? I didn't get that.
