I love that this thread has been going for over a decade. It should be protected forever! xD

Where to begin? I have been listening to Japanese music regularly for 16 years roughly, and in that time I've had so many favorites. Love for some have come and gone a little, but most I am still just as much into today. I couldn't possibly list them all off the top of my head, so I'll just name some favorites off the top of my head who've influenced me most.

Utada HIkaru

Not a band, but an individual singer. Akiko Shikata; I love her fantastical songs inspired by different musical styles from around the world.

Lately it's been Fishmans. Their final three albums play out like an epic dub/dream pop trilogy unlike anything else in popular Japanese music. I've also been listening to a lot of Sunny Day Service.
