An Interesting Article

So I was browsing on http://www.mangaupdates.com to see if anything new had been released and an announcement had caught my attention. I researched a bit and this was what I found.
BinkTopia/Mangashare's claim: Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide From: http://www.mangaupdates.com/news.html?id=348 "In earlier April, manga download site MangaShare, on behalf of the scanlation group Binktopia, posted an announcement criticizing BleachExile for removing the credit page from their work on BleachExile's online reader. BleachExile is currently one of the largest Bleach fan sites that offer downloads of Bleach anime, manga and numerous other series and medias. In mid-April, Binktopia, enforcing their re-distribution policy found in their credits page, sent a request to BleachExile to remove Binktopia scanlations from their website, stating MangaShare is the official distribution site for all Binktopia releases. However, Binktopia received an "unsatisfying" response, leading them to putting up a public service announcement regarding BleachExile. In response, BleachExile began removing the credits page for all releases from MangaShare, Binktopia, bludshock, and #blood, and stated that without an apology, they would continue to remove the credits page. Although threads on the topic has been removed from BleachExile's forum, (due to claims of a PHP virus in the thread that runs on vBulletin) their view regarding this incident can still be viewed here: Page 1, http://www.mangaupdates.com/manick/b-e/search.htm.1.htm Page 2, http://www.mangaupdates.com/manick/b-e/search.htm.2.htm Page 3. http://www.mangaupdates.com/manick/b-e/search.htm.3.htm MangaShare’s administrator, Blud, and his crew has put forth a lot of effort on going against websites with rules and actions that are found to be questionable among the scanlation community, with last year’s StopNF.png page (seen at the top of the site) being the most well known. Currently, with no agreement reached by both sides, MS/Binktopia has come to an unanimous decision to watermark random pages of their scans." BleachExile's owner responce: Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide BinkTopia/Mangashare's reply: Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide So from what I understand a manga-scanlating group and a site that distributes their work got onto bad terms with each other. Apparently the site distributing the work was requested to stop for some reason and later they ended up refusing and then went deleting all the credit pages, like stealing the scanlator's work. I was kinda shocked by it and was wondering what your views were.. |

Ehh im not gonna read through the forums, but just from your little synapse, BleachExile is pretty screwed up. Anyone think BinkTopia could file a copyright suit against BleachExile? Or does copyrights not apply for translations.

Yeah good luck filing a copyright suit over work that any court would consider to be pirated to begin with.
This was like when db cried over crunchyroll hosting bleach, they got nothing. One could argue that since the translations are done by said company, that the translations are in fact theirs, but they are unlawfully distributing a copy of the manga to begin with, since it isn't theirs. The case would never see any legal action. I like how the translation people seem to think they own the manga because they translated it, it does not work that way, if any thing they're breaching copyright by translating it (copying and altering an original work), let alone distributing it online once doing so. |

BinkTopia just wants credit for their work, I don't think they have ever said they owned their scans or anything. Hell, they even distribute their cleaned scans to help other groups translate and improve their work.
Binktopia was kinda foolish to request claim that Mangashare was their only distributer, but it does make sense to some extend. Mangashare and Binktopia are partners and it would make sense to wish that Mangashare would have more traffic and become more popular. I feel BleachExile's owner was being an ass to refuse to remove their releases. He could simply link the downloads to Mangashare. It isn't like they are going to lose face for redirecting to a different site to download. A second request was reasonable in my opinion, but BleachExile simply refused and went as far as to delete all the credit pages. That was what really got me, in a sense they are stealing their work. Even if Binktopia's releases were meant to be distributed, due to the popularity of BleachExile, more people support/visit/donate to them instead of the real makers. |

Yeah, they're being unfair, but Binktopia has no legal right to request credit. |

If BinkTopia is so ticked off by them, why don't they just do a DoS attack on BleachExile? Or why don't they just give up because they don't have any legal rights to add the credits page at the end of each scanslation?

They did the translation and much more than that. I'm not saying this is huge lawsuit material, but BleachExile owners are fucking dumb asses playing little kiddies game "Liek omg I no credit u no more!" |

Drama, Drama, Drama. People just need to get over it. Most people don't even read to the Credit page anyway.

I think Binktopias claim is rational. I mean, after all that hard work, someone goes in and deletes the credits page. Besides, even if theyre asking for donations, you dont have to give it to them. Not so sure about the Mangashare thing though...
