Why is Rayne so much more favored (the poll is around 86% favored) than the others?

Is it because he actually has traits that are that much more attractive?

Nyx: I have wealth, linage, manners, leadership, (secret???)
Rayne: I am scientist, like studying, emotionally distant
J.D. Free spirit, humorous/eccentric so far, maybe doesn't take things seriously enough
Hyuga: physically beautiful, guardian/protector, very servant like, (butterflies???)

Rayne gets much more screen time w/ Angelique than anyone
Rayne is the most emotionally distant (or rude) to Angelique
Rayne and Nyx have mysteries (older brother, and secret)

Or is it because of plot devices (more screen time, mysteries) rather than personality traits?

My Opinion----V

It's his hair ^^ Plain and simple.

But no, I like Rayne because I think he's really cool. Scientists rank very high in my opinion. And he's not really rude, he's actually pretty caring sometimes (I think).

I don't know, Nyx is cool, but I just don't like him as much.

Hm. I think your point with the psychological drive of wanting to fix a guy's problems is pretty much spot on (sorry if that was a terrible unintended pun). I have this notion that girls tend to gravitate towards guys with a little angst and a nice face (ex. Sasuke and Agatsuma Soubi).

Also Nyx was the first one we actually meet, he had to be portrayed as a little distant from Angelique to enable the plot to advance. Angelique's meeting with Lein, however, was far more intimate, and his initial reaction to her was something that would really get fangirls squealing. The fact that he is also the first person we properly see fighting the Thanatos (and effortlessly trashing a few of them) probably also tilts the scale in his favour, since, as we all know, guys who can fight are cool.

It may also be that Lein's image is the closest to the modern norm (Hyuuga's got Japanese elements, Nyx's style is hopelessly outdated - but still elegant - and Jade... is a little eclectic in his clothing...) I don't think you'd get much support if you tried to say Lein's taste in fashion is lacking. Lein's stubborness is, I believe, an attractive feature for young women in modern society; "cool" and "distant" seem to be popular in this time and age...

As higher education becomes more accessible to youths, society begins to place more emphasis on academic excellence. It is likely that most people who watch anime are still in school of some sort. People admire qualities in others that they do not possess themselves, and as the vast majority of the audience does not have intelligence that can compare with Lein's, they probably support him because of it.

On the same note, Jade's style of living is attainable through some effort (or lack thereof), and a genius level IQ is not. Hyuuga's and Nyx's lifestyles are too far removed from that of the audience, so although they are "cool," I do not believe they have as good a rapport with viewers as Lein does.

Sorry for making you read through this unnecessarily long post (since half of it could probably be safely cut off...).

the hair definately helps. but its mostly a mixture of plot devices and character traits. Smart men are very sexy and the fact that he spends all day reading books and gathering information plays into that.

Nyx: reminded me more of a father (decades old with experience) and he kind of groomed and helped her grow....him as a love interest seems almost incestuous to me.

Hyuga: more of an older brother- guarding and supporting her

JD: again, seems more like a playful brother, lending her an ear when she needs it and otherwise joking around

All but Nyx seem to distance themselves from her, believing in their "assigned" roles (JD: robot, Hyuga: warrior/protector) where you don't feel that they really give themselves a chance to be romantic.

Due to this, the love interest has to be Rayne. He's distant and hard to understand making women/girls want to get to know him, watch him open up because that is usually want most chicks like. A bad ass with a soft heart for only the person he loves. That is what I think is the psychology behind most audience liking him...that and his hair doesn't hurt either!!

Of course I can only speak for myself as to why I like Rayne so much....
I think because Rayne really stands out in appearance. I'm really curious about his character first. The others, you kinda have a feel for just because their character design.

Like what Cold_Elation suggested...
Nyx has an old fashion theme- so that would suggest that he has manners, intelligent and such
Hyuuga has traditional gaurdian theme - so that would suggest he's quite disciplined, by-the-book kind of guy.
Jade ...well because he is an artifact/robot, he probably isn't experienced in the romantic category as suggested by his inability to display emotions in the beginning.

Also, I agree with CrazedKay, Rayne's distant, and hard to understand yet also mysterious. He has a hard shell with a soft inside. He has a rebellious, bad-boy attitude yet he's a scientist?!? .....

I think if they made Hyuuga less servant-like and distant, (making him open up at the end and showing that he has feelings for Angelique) I have no doubt he would be a runner up for women/girls. But because he has that withdrawn attitude, it's like a "so close, but yet so far" appeal for me.

.....Could you imagine if they had Nyx and Rayne switch personalities? Or even Nyx and Hyuuga?

Personally I liked Rosh.
I mean Rayne was cute and all. But personality wise Rosh, I mean he totally went for Angelique, and that's what I liked. And I think Angie knew he had feelings for her.

'Girl Psychology'?

Oh, do you mean 'Why does the premise behind Neo Angelique Abyss (1st & 2nd seasons) attract female viewers?'

For the same reason girls obsess over the 'Twilight' books and movies. The heroine is portrayed as having a tragic past, is as pretty and thin as most girls would like to be, is perceived as special by everyone around her and all of the boys she encounters (all of the good-looking, BTW) fall in love with her.
In other words, because the premise is something that nearly every girl fantasizes about at one point or another (unless she's attracted to other girls - then the fantasy model becomes Strawberry Panic!)

Each of the men in this anime conform to a standard 'type' common to anime. Rayne seems to be the choice of most girls in their teens and some in their twenties, due to the 'bad boy' look and the fact he's closer to their own age. Nyx is usually seen (up until the last episode of the first season) as 'too old for her'. He gains the approval of far more fangirls in the second season, probably due to the character development and the whole 'only the love of a good woman can save ne now' theme so very, very common in romance novels, bad fanfiction and occasionally abusive relationships in real life. Hyuga and Nyx trail the other two because they are 'nice guys' and therefore don't tweak the 'can I reform such a bad guy and make him good' response. Roche is a bit of a wild card, since he fits the mold of a 'bad boy' but seems so non-threatening it's amazing he's survived on the streets as long as he has. He'd be dead by morning in Jersey.

In real life, I've dated Raynes and Nyxs and all of them ended badly because there really is no reforming a man with serious problems or secrets (Nyx), or who just isn't grown up enough to make a commitment (Rayne). I got lucky and married someone closer to J.D., as he does his own laundry and is capable of cleaning. Cooking, however, is beyond him. Oh well, real love isn't perfect. But it's darned close.
