an SUV is a lousy choice of first car they don't drive well and a new driver is more likely to crash in one trying to learn.

also they handle like crap for the most part why do you think so many SUV drivers look like shit drivers because the SUV is doing stuff they aren't ready for and is like driving a truck when turning a corner which also means pain in the butt parking for new drivers.

oh by the way when i said a small or sports car would probably kill you i meant with you inside them not them hitting you.

depends what your preferences are,lol.

do you like fwd, awd, rwd?

do you prefer imports or domestics?

what engine style you prefer 4cyl., 6cyl., 8cyl. + , and do you like v-type, inline h-type engines, even slant, lol.

for me it would be mazda's line-up, miata, rx-7, rx-8, rx-9( still waiting to be released, lol), mazda 3 mazdaspeed.

If you're looking for something fun to drive and has a decent aftermarket, the Nissan 240SX and 300ZX Z32 are great cars you can get for around your price rance. Along with the offerings from Nissan, there's the Mazda Miata and RX-7, both FC and FD. Hachi-rokus are okay, but a little played out thank to the drift fad. If you're in a area that tends to get snow, then the FWD cars that are great as well are Honda Civic EG6 and EK9, along with the DC2 Integra. As for AWD, If you can find a WRX in your price range with relatively low miles then for that. If you want to go with ze Germans, then the B5 Audi A4s are great cars, just make sure if you get the 1.8t stay away from the 1997 year.

A Scion TC. A good car overall plus it has great potential if you wanna tune it up. Or a used Civic because everyone and their baby's mama has a Civic so I'm sure you can get someone to fix it for cheap if it breaks down on you.
