Chiemi Hori creates world's biggest 'onigiri'

Friday 07th May, 03:48 AM JST

Former idol singer Chiemi Hori, 43, has created the world’s largest “onigiri.” Onigiri, commonly translated as rice ball or rice cake in English, is a popular snack food in Japan. The mildly seasoned, hand-molded ball may contain a variety of fillings, and is a fixture in convenience stores.

Hori made the giant onigiri by combining 5,555 individual rice balls into a single creation, beating the previous record of 5,040. The new record-holding onigiri is approximately 27 by 2 square meters in size and has been record in the Guinness World Records.

“This is the first time I’ve tried for a world record of any kind,” Hori said. “It was very exciting.”

Her contribution was part of Food Action Nippon, a movement sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. In the campaign, the ministry asks various companies to promote increased consumption of agricultural produce harvested in regional areas of Japan.
