What do they think of our Western obsession with their 'exotic' culture?

I mean, many Irishmen and women find the 'Plastic-Paddy' phenomenon among Americans quite annoying, with many American folks going to Ireland to do what they think is 'Irish', various cultural activities like going to a Pub, visiting the country-side, looking for leprechauns, &c. to rediscover their heritage and all that. Do the Japanese experience the same phenomenon? Do they find it annoying, amusing, or do they welcome it as an opportunity to make money?

yeah well tourists are always pretty annoying, unless they actually want to learn about your culture and not just see everything they can.

But honestly, most Japanese people are obsessed with western people's exoticism too.

I have blue eyes and brown hair and when i went to school for a week in japan people would stare at me in the halls, and when i said hi they would say 'wow! she's so cute!" and stuff like that. XD not trying to be up myself... it's just that Japanese people find people from different cultures interesting and exotic, just like we might find their culture exotic. ^^

I'm from Japan so I can help you a littlebit. We are happy that many people are intrested in Japan and attracted to our culture but Japan is not whole anime and manga dream land so you will be disappointed if you expect too much from it.

Also we don't like when people mixed up Japan with other Asian countries. When westerners make movies based on Japanese clture they often have something like China taste. Another thing is something popular in Asia is not always popular in Japan or it's other way around.

Yes, like Ruthenium44 said Japanes people find Westerner look exotic. When I was watching live broadcast from Japan Expo in Paris on Nico video last week with other 20,000 Japanes otakus(I can see the number on the screen that how many people are watching it ) , most of the time they commented on French people or cosplayers that they were kawaii or good looking even though they just look ordinary or little bit nerdy for me. So I text a comment that they are just averge looking people for westerners.

As someone who has spent time in Japan

In general, they like the attention and don't mind it, but the problem at times can be the people that come over to Japan. She's stated that the worst people that come over there are often Anime fans and hipster douchebags that usually only see Japan as one big 'White Guy Amusement Park.'

Also, the 'exoticness' aspect is reciprocated. As pu-pon stated above, the West is equally as exotic to the Japanese as Japan is to the West. I'm black, and believe me, I got so many questions about the US, my skintone, what I like, etc.

One thin that I will tell anyone who wants to go to Japan is to CONTROL YOUR EGO. Not all Japanese women are hot (in fact, where I was in Tokyo - I stayed with a family in Azabu Juuban - I saw some busted chicks), and if they're nice to you, it's not because they want to have sex with you. It's because Japan is a culture that places importance on politeness. Ultimately, the Japanese merely sees Westerners as exotic, but they will not worship you or treat you any better for it.
