In this thread, we'll discuss anime which was originally released as motion pictures, or as short OAV series. In other words, videos that tell a satisfying story in two hours or less. I'm specifically looking for videos which do not require knowledge of long anime TV series, manga, games, etc. We will focus on movies/OAVs which can be genuinely enjoyable. That said, you're certainly free to mention movies/OAVs that were flawed but good, or so bad they're compelling. If the series in question have quality dubbed dialogue and optional subtitles, be sure to say so.

Why do I bring this up? Because some of my current friends are fellow adults who have little to no knowledge of anime and related media. I've been thinking about showing them a movie or a short OAV series, so that they can watch just one video and have a decent experience.

An example of a video worth discussing in this thread:

* "Princess Mononoke." A movie originally created for theaters, which is not based on any series. It's a fantasy, yet its tone is serious, and the movie is a drama about human civilization versus the spirit world and the natural world. Most of its violence makes sense in context... though I admit I laughed a bit at the "shoot a soldier's head off" scene. The DVD includes English and subtitled Japanese dialogue. The dubbed dialogue from Touchstone is not bad, though it might have a few too many recognizable celebrity voices, and some of them might not at their best as voice actors.

Other standalone movies I can name from memory... "Nausicaa," "Laputa - Castle in the Sky," "Porco Rosso," "Spirited Away," "Howl's Moving Castle," "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time," "Summer Wars"... and probably many I'm forgetting.

Videos which may be worth discussing:

* Movies/OAVs which are decent adaptations of longer series. For instance, a number of theatrical-length movies take footage from long series and re-work them. This has been done for years -- movies that compress classic "Gundam" and "Macross" storylines exist, and "Gurren Lagaan" was re-made into two theater movies.

* Movies and OAVs which are based on longer series, but you think they're enjoyable on their own. "Castle of Cagliostro" is still pretty good even if you don't know much about "Lupin III." And some fans still like the anime movies which were based on the seriously long "Akira" and "Fist of the North Star" series.

Examples of videos not worth discussing in this thread:

* OAV series over two hours. For instance, the "Magic Users Club" OAV series is only six episodes long, but it works out to about three hours in length.

* Movies which are not interesting unless you know the anime/manga/game/toy/whatever they're based on. If it's set in the middle of a story arc, or after a season, then it's probably only interesting for fans.

5 Centimeters Per Second has nice graphics although the story is a bit melancholic. I'm hooked on finding/watching good anime short films because of this. Thanks for the titles by the way.
