The show's title is 「モーレツ宇宙海賊」 which transliterates to romaji as "Mōretsu Uchuu Kaizoku." The 「海賊」 has "PAIRĒTSU" in Katakana above it, suggesting that is how it should be pronounced.
In the next episode previews, the title is pronounced "Mōretsu Pairētsu." The title has "BODACIOUS SPACE PIRATES" underneath it, even on the official website, so please understand that this is not something that CR added.
So, I would prefer the naming be "Moretsu Pirates" since that's the original pronunciation.

Bonus: per Jeffrey's Japanese to English Dictionary:
moretsu (adj-na) violent; vehement; raging; stout; intense; spirited; stormy; (P)

Bonus 2: per Wikipedia:
Miniskirt Space Pirates (ミニスカ宇宙海賊 Minisuka Pairētsu) is a Japanese light novel series written by Yūichi Sasamoto, which began publication from Asahi Shimbun from October 2008. An anime television series adaptation produced by Satelight, under the title Bodacious Space Pirates (モーレツ宇宙海賊 Mōretsu Pairētsu), began airing in Japan from January 8, 2012.

So the original name of the novel series was not even the same as the anime!

I've always known it as Bodacious Space Pirates, so for me, that title has precedent on its side. It's also part of why I chose to watch it, since I don't know if I would have been drawn to it if its title hadn't made me expect it to be some vacuous trash about the effect of zero-gravity on breasts of improbable volume and how in space short skirts can suddenly float up, revealing OH NO! PANTIES TEE-HEE, only to have that expectation roundly defeated by the previews. I've even developed considerable affection for the title by now.

Elsewhere a Japanese fellow explained that mōretsu might have a literal meaning of 'fierce' or 'extreme', which could have yielded the even more painfully and less endearingly nineties title of Extreme Space Pirates, but it has long had a sexual connotation and association with miniskirts, as evidence in this advertisement from 1969. So, divorced from social context and usage history, which is an awful way to look at language, but all that dictionaries can really do, bodacious makes a certain kind of sense as a translation for mōretsu. The Japanese are fortunate enough to be largely ignorant of Pauly Shore, so it's forgivable that they gave it an inadvertently silly English title.

When I first heard of this show last Summer, I think it was either called "Miniskirt Pirates' or "Pantyhose Pirates" or something like that. And THAT was immediately caught my attention, 'cuz it' just sounds so dumb. But that's what I like about it. "Moretsu" just doesn't do anything for me as an English speaking native. But just like the previous poster mentioned, something like "Bodacious Space Pirates" just conjures up images of some trashy, goofball piece of modern television programming and that's a big appeal for me watching a show like this.

I mean seriously, can't you just dig a conversation with your friend who is not as into anime as you are but just curious about the medium going something like this:

Me: Yes, anime can be a good medium for providing innovative and thought provoking works of art and you should definitely check out some of the shows out there today.

Non-Anime friend: Oh really?

Me: Yes, and in fact there's this one show I'm watching right now that provides deep and philosophical views on the human condition and makes you look at man's relationship to the world around him in a whole new thought provoking way.

Non-Anime friend: So what's this show called?

Me: Yeah its called "Bodacious Space Pirates"

Non-Anime friend: ....... ......???

Only in Anime. LOLZ

I prefer BSP. Makes it sound pleasantly campy. Titles are supposed to grab you, and "Moretsu" does nothing for people that don't know the language. Do prefer Miniskirt Space Pirates though, wish they just left it like that

I have come to realize that Bodacious Space Pirates really is the only title that truly fits this series.
