During the late Nara to the early Heian period, at a time when the giant statue of Buddha in Nara was created and the capital about to be moved to present day Kyoto, there were a people whom the imperial people called ‘emishi’ in Tohoku. They are indigenous people of the north who have a distinct culture of their own and live peacefully with nature, but this peace is in jeopardy because the imperial court is trying to extend its influence all over by conquering the North. In Isawa in present day Oushu City, Iwate Prefecture), a youth called Aterui (Osawa Takao) rises up to protect his homeland and people. Together with his comrade More, Aterui boldly challenges the formidable military power of the imperial army. As several battles are fought, the land is laid to waste and Aterui, who loses many men, gradually starts to have doubts about the very nature of fighting. Feeling conflicted and saddened, he heads into more battles. And then, at the final battle, he and arch enemy Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, the chief commander of the imperial army, begin a climactic showdown … …

Osawa Takao starring in NHK period drama "Kaen - Kita no Eiyuu Aruteiden"

Osawa Takao will be starring in the NHK period drama "Kaen - Kita no Eiyuu Aruteiden" as anounced during a production press conference on 2 September. The story is based on a novel by Takahashi Katsuhiko who lives in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, and is based on an aboriginal hero Arutei who fought against the Yamato Court to protect the Isawa area between the 8th and 9th centuries. The drama which is also meant as an encouragement to Iwate which was hit by the tsunami crisis, will be shot in Iwate from late September and is due to be shown via BS Premium in January 2013 and the NHK general channel in March 2013.
