That's fine. I have no need for the service. Though thanks for the reply.

That doesn't really sound right. Netflix and other streaming services all offer the ability to turn on and off subtitles on arguably more demanding videos as well, as all videos on this website are anime shows as TV ver. at 1080p max.

As this is one of the only websites to legally watch new shows in NA, it's quite disappointing to see the lack of a such essential functionality.

CR tried soft subtitles with the earliest version of the iOS app. It didn't work out well.

Hard coded subtitles overcome a number of potential problems, and given that CR has more important issues to address, don't expect a change any time soon.

Only a small minority of viewers don't want subtitles, so it is not "essential" functionality.

Watching anime is not really a good way to learn Japanese. You're better off taking a class at your local college or other resources online.

Amazon and Funimation do it with their players...

I have the same problem with goaty378, I can't turn off Spanish subtitles on the first Naruto. The English subtitles are already in the video itself.

Here is a hack for the Duplicate Subtitles as seen in Chrome:

1. Right Click on the page you are trying to watch
2. Click "Inspect"
3. Click "Console"

--- Stick with me here ---

3. You should see a dropdown/select with the word "top" ..... Scroll and Click player.html

4. Towards the bottom you should see a right caret ">" where you can type

Copy and Paste this in there:

var stylesheet = document.createElement('style');
stylesheet.innerText = '.libassjs-canvas-parent { visibility: hidden !important; }';
document.body.append(stylesheet);

5. Press Enter

This should remove the subtitles not set as your primary. Let me know if you guys have any issues.
Tomorrow I will look into the other issue where some shows do not display english subtitles at all.
On that note, I'm going back to Naruto. Have a great night!

Hopefully Crunchyroll fixes this.

Slightly more convenient hack (so you don't have to do it each time you watch something)

1. Install uBlock Origin (Chrome link, Firefox link)

2. Click the uBlock Origin icon in the top-right of the browser

3. Click the icon with the sliders (small, below the power button icon and to the right)

4. Click the "My Filters" tab

5. Paste this text:

##.libassjs-canvas
###miniProgressContainer

This will also hide the bottom orange bar that is in the new HTML5 player. Remove the second line of this text if you want it.

6. Go to the Filter Lists tab and turn off the Ad lists to make Crunchyroll ads reappear

I haven't tested it, but this should also work in Firefox on Android (not too sure how the HTML5 player will work there).

Download the Crunchyroll HTML5 video player replacer for your browser, it still HTML5, but it's just like YouTube where you can just select the subtitles from the little gear icon at the bottom.

Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/crunchyroll-html5/ihegfgnkffeibpmnajnoiemkcmlbmhmi/related?hl=en

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/crunchyroll-html5-unofficial/

I am not looking for Japanese subtitles, I just want to turn off all subtitles. That shouldn't have any bearing on licensing agreements, unless something funny has been agreed upon.

You are incorrect. If watching movies, anime, or listing to music gets someone to enjoy and understand studying a language better, then it is a great tool. And never listen to that false information that says you learn to speak in an "incorrect way", as you learn the language you piece together how to speak without worrying about such trivialities.
