Animes to watch that you might not know about
![]() |
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide sadbegfan wrote: So decided to create a forum to help people and myself look for more animes to watch that are not quite mainstream animes. Most people have heard of the Narutos,One Pieces,Attack on Titan(one of my favorite spring lineups btw), and most of this springs line up. I love to watch anime pretty much everyday for a couple hours to relax and unwind. So in-between my current weekly simulcasted airings i look for another anime to watch while i wait for the next episode to come on. I like to look for non mainstream animes that some people might not have heard of to expand my anime library. I'll start of with my list to kind of set the tone to what im looking for. Feel free to discuss why you like a certain anime, why people should definitely check one out, or what ever suites ya while you create your list. If any questions about any of the ones i submitted just let me know, you can also check my watchlist out if your looking for something to watch, i continue to add to it as i watch. The list is in no particular order of preference: 1)Ergo Proxy: In a world where humans and androids, known as autoreivs, live in relative peace, there exists a domed city named "Romdeau". Under the implementation of complete management control, it is a paradise where feelings are literally discarded, and the governing council dictates the way of life the citizens should live. But this Utopian landscape is soon broken by a series of mystifying murders. Re-L Mayer, a female inspector from the Citizen Information Bureau, along with her autoreiv partner Iggy, are tasked to solve the murder cases. She is soon attacked by a creature drawn to her which is neither human nor android, and learns about the mysterious phenomena called "Awakening", an event which draws her further into the case...and to the world beyond the limits of Romdeau. 2)Serial Experiments Lain: The first episode opens with the mysterious suicide of a high-school girl, Chisa Yomoda. Chisa-chan was a classmate of Lain Iwakura, a quiet, 14-year-old high-school girl. One of the other girls in the class has been receiving e-mail messages from Chisa-chan, and Lain discovers she also has mail from Chisa-chan. In the mail she explains to Lain that she just abandoned her flesh. She assures lain that she still is alive in the 'wired' world. After getting a new 'navi' and adding a 'psyche' circuit, Lain spends more and more time in the wired. It seems that Lain has at least 2 personalities, and Lain's first personality is changing even now. Who is lain? Who are the 'knights'? Can the wired influence the real world with a prophecy? Is the real world nothing but a hologram of the information in the wired? 3)Haibane Renmei: A dream of falling from the sky...and then birth. Rakka is born from a large cocoon into the Old Home, greeted by a group of females with small wings on their backs and shining halos above their heads. Soon Rakka’s own wings grow, a halo is placed on her head and she is told that she must work in the nearby town of Grie. She soon realizes that the town and the entire world they live in are confined behind the Wall, a tall, impenetrable wall that none except the mysterious Toga are allowed to exit 4)Wolf's Rain: According to an old legend, when the end of the world comes, Paradise will appear; however, only wolves will know how to find it. Although wolves are believed to have been hunted to extinction nearly two hundred years ago, they still exist, surviving by taking human form. Freeze City is a northern human city in a world where the majority of people live in poverty and hardship. 5)Now and Then Here and There: Shu is a typical Japanese boy, but has an unbeatable, optimistic and determined attitude. However, when he sees a mysterious girl with strange eyes named Lala-Ru up on a smokestack, he is soon pulled into a strange desert world. Shu soon discovers the true terrors of war, which includes genocide, brutal torture, hunger, thirst, and child exploitation. Now Shu is trying to save Lala-Ru, as well as his hard earned, and often reluctant, new friends from the insane dictator, Hamdo. Whether Shu can possibly accomplish saving those he cares about while still holding up to his values remains to be seen. 6)Paranoia Agent: An elementary school boy on inline skates dubbed Lil' Slugger is said to be responsible for a series of mysterious street assaults in Tokyo. None of the victims can recall the boy's face and only three distinct details are left in their memories: golden inline skates, a baseball cap, and the weapon: a bent golden baseball bat. 7)FLCL: Naota is a normal Japanese 6th grade boy (although a little cynical), but when his older brother leaves for America to play baseball, his brother leaves his homeless 17 year old girlfriend Mamimi behind. Mamimi is sending mixed signals and advances to Naota, and he doesn't know what to do about her. But to make matters worse, Naota's world is totally turned upside down when he is run over by a woman on a Vespa. During their first encounter, she hits him over the head with her guitar, which then causes a horn to grow out of his forehead. She calls herself "Haruko" and her presence changes Naota's life to even further insanity. 8)Utawarerumono: The story takes place in the world surrounded by nature such as forests. In this world, there is the mankind almost looks like the human being, but it has ears and a tail like an animal. One day, Eruru who lives in a village of marginal region saves a masked young man lying serious injured. Fortunately, he narrowly escapes from the death, but he has lost his memory. Tuskle, the grandmother of Eruru, names him Hakuoro. Soon, this encounter will make them lead checkered lives. 9)Juuni Kokuki(The Twelve Kingdoms): Yoko Nakajima, an unhappy high school student, is one day suddenly faced with a strange man who swears allegiance to her. After a battle with demon-like beasts, he then takes her to another world along with two of her classmates. There, her appearance has changed and she can understand the language even though her classmates cannot. But their status as "Kaikyaku" (people who come from Earth) makes them hunted fugitives, so they wander the land of the 12 countries, simply trying to survive and to figure out the reason why they were brought to this world 10) Mushishi: The Mushi are neither plant nor animal, neither microbe nor fungus. They are more like primitive life forms. Their existence is so innocuous that we don't notice that they exist until they have manifested some mysterious phenomena. They do not exist to frighten people; they just are. These are one-off stories about Ginko, the Mushishi, one who knows about the Mushi and who acts as a mediator between humans and Mushi. During his journey, he meets various people and Mushi. I posted animes that I've watched from winter till now. Some are still airing others are older and not very known. I hope you'll find something in this list. [mod edit: spoiler tag added, because this list is long!--lorreen] Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Chihayafuru 2 airing Date A Live Death Note Haiyore! B Gata H Kei-
![]() Summary: Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide B Gata H Kei revolves around 15-year-old high school student Yamada, whose lascivious nature causes her to aspire to one day achieve sexual relations with 100 different guys. However, her insecurities as a virgin herself lead her to reject every guy that attempts to make a move on her. In order to hurdle this mental barrier Yamada goes on a search for her "cherry boy", an inexperienced guy upon whom she will bestow the right to be her first. One day while perusing a bookstore for the replacement of a dictionary she had defiled by highlighting all the sexual terms, Yamada has a fateful encounter with classmate Takashi Kosuda. Believing that Kosuda is the boy she is looking for Yamada goes to great lengths to try to seduce him. All the while, she discovers the difficulties in making that first important step towards reaching her goals, not to mention, finding out her true feelings for him. Sankarea- ![]() Summary: Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Chihiro Furuya is a male high school student with a keen interest in zombies, collecting zombie-related videogames, film and manga, and even to the point of desiring to "kiss a zombie girl". Following the death of his pet cat, Bābu, he attempts to revive it using an old manuscript, which describes the process of creating a potion for resurrection. At this time, he encounters a girl named Rea Sanka, who has run away from home. In an attempt to commit suicide, she drinks a sample of the "resurrection" potion which is created from the poisonous Hydrangea macrophylla flower, although this fails to kill her. Following an argument with her father, she falls from a cliff by accident and dies. However, as a result of the potion, she becomes a zombie who eats hydrangea leaves to survive. Midori Days- ![]() Summary: Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Seiji Sawamura is the toughest student in his high school. His grades aren't very good because he fights more than he studies, but he tends to protect the weaker students from bullies. A few classmates idolize him; one (Midori Kasugano from a different school) shyly loves him from afar; but most are just afraid of him, which has made it impossible for him to find a girlfriend. In desperation, he says to himself that he will grow old with only his right Demon-hand as lifelong companion — until one morning when he wakes to find a miniature Midori attached to where his right hand used to be. Over the next two weeks the pair adapt to this sudden and forced closeness. Much mayhem, and some romance, ensue. Seiji does his best to hide Midori from other people; she wears a bandage around her head and pretends to be his injured hand. Midori frequently professes her love to Seiji (even wearing a dress she made and embroidered with "I ♥ Seiji"), but Seiji fails to notice, even as he frequently laments that he'll never find a girl who loves him. ***Kept my list short and on animes i truly believe most don't know. Hope you guys check em out and support these diamonds in the rough!*** |

just want to thank everyone who has posted with positive feedback,i was starting to doubt whether or not my post and thread would be helpful like i was looking for it to be. Im glad to see that some have something else to watch now and that you have given me some more choices as well. In my previous situation i didnt have accessible access to the internet so a lot on my list were completely new to me, and when i asked around the circles i knew about they would always qoute the classic mainstreams, but now that im fully connected and dont have to watch what was just on tv or on just my phones crunchyroll app, i can fully dive into the anime culture that i so enjoy. Not everyone has complete access so not many know everything that is out there and i just wanted to help people that was like me just late last year. Thanks greatly appreciate the constant feedback.

Some good choices:
Bokurano (unfortunately, never licensed in the U.S.) B Gata H Kei (ignore the plot synopsis, it has almost nothing to do with the actual show, which is a fun romantic comedy) Patlabor the OAVs Nichijou Honey & Clover NANA Skip Beat Kanamemo 009-1 And then there are old things that were popular years ago that a lot of fans today weren't even alive during their heyday, like Escalowne or Macross 7. |
I have almost no free time, and yet I'm here...priorities

Hajime no Ippo (also known as Fighting Spirit)
This show follows a young boy, Ippo, on his adventure into the realm of boxing. Most people seem to think is that it will be utter garbage just by seeing its about boxing. This is very untrue as it has some of the most epic fights I've ever seen in anime. I personally found it very fun to watch him slowly progress and changer throughout the series. From who he'll be going up against or to what move he well learn. It all made for a very satisfying show. It is also a longer show, about 75 episodes with one TV special. There is also a second season called , Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger, but this has yet to be licensed. The major downside to this show is that it is NOT available for streaming and can set you back a good chunk of change to buy it. I just finished collecting it. It came to a little over 300 dollars. |
