Just a few days before they announced One Piece is available I was looking all over the forums and checking if they will ever give it to us.

It implies that MangUK (the home video distributor) doesn't have exclusive streaming rights, so that's a good tidbit that UK fans were able to get from MangaUK.

It doesn't necessarily imply anything about whether there is a contract that does hold the rights, or someone in negotiation for the rights, since if MangaUK never requested the streaming rights, they might simply not be privy to those details.

That kind of uncertainty is frustrating ~ its another reason why sometimes these deals take what seems like a very long time to come together.

Also, all the animax back catalogue is lifted either from Anime on Demand or from Kaze with the sole exception of vampire knight, which, like most Kaze titles, is the property of Viz in the US, but is licensed in the UK by MangaUK.

Yes, it looks very much like AnimaxUK started out with one or a couple of package deals ... but then again, One Piece is a big enough title to shoot for an individual contract rather than a package deal, even for the UK market.

Given that One Piece is Funimation in the US and MangaUK in the UK, I doubt we'll see them add it to the back catalogue.

But remember that Kaze Germany is the German distributor ... and that OnePiece is an ongoing simulcast, so its not a pure back catalogue pick-up.

But then, given that it took 23 years after the TV series started airing in Japan (and 17 years after Funimation got it in the US) before Toei were prepared to offer the UK rights for home release of DBZ at a doable price, I really don't think we'll be seeing One Piece being streamed here any time soon.

With Toei freeing up North American streaming rights, and evidently getting Latin American streaming rights in the hands of Toei Latin America, it would not be surprising if they end up untangling European streaming rights for some company in Europe to pick up. Sony's Animax properties in Europe would be one angle on that, Viz Media Europe another.

I feel like I should just say this... and I don't know what others' opinions are, but I really hope CR starts going with the romanization/translation style K-F went with, romanizing non-real words like kairouseki (or sea stone, that works too) and using the expression "pirate king" (which is what my dictionary said for 海賊王, not king of the pirates, even though it isn't 海賊の王 so that should be fairly obvious). At any rate, hope the subbers starts doing it like K-F subs did. This does not take away from my rejoicing of the fact that One Piece is finally on here, I just hope they go with said subbing style.
At any rate, thanks guys.

You have got to be kidding me. I get all excited, thinking I'll finally get a chance to actually watch One Piece, and I wont get that chance because I'm in the UK/EU? What a bunch of crap..

It appears that Crunchyroll's version is just a re-upload of the same simulcast found on OnePieceOfficial.com/Hulu/Funimation.com (or a re-encoded version with the same script, at any rate). It's the same as the situation with Naruto Shippuden. CR doesn't really have a say in the translation.

Well, at least that explains the discrepancies I've seen. Now if only they could edit them... I doubt it'd be too hard to do, but, eh, let's see how used to Funi's (IMO) poorly localized subs I can get. But hey, at least we have One Piece now XD

Don't get me excited about One Piece coming to Crunchy and then tell me I can't watch it because I live in the UK. What is the point of even sending me that email?

The hard thing to do would likely be the part of getting approval from Toei for the edits. It would almost certainly have to be an alternative subtitle rather than a replacement subtitle, like the subtitles with honorifics in Nozomi's Maria-sama ga Miteru releases, which would use the soft-subtitle mechanism that Crunchyroll already uses to put up different languages.

And even there, Toei might just be uninterested in going through the approvals process for an alternative subtitles ~ after all, the Maria-sama ga Miteru releases were three 13 episode series and 5 50-minute OVA episodes, while there are many hundreds of One Piece episodes.

First things first, though ... getting access to more regions seems like a higher priority than getting permission to commission an alternative subtitle translation.
