My vote goes to: SNAFU

So I've watched the first few episodes of SNAFU and watched the first episode of Watamote. SNAFU is more of my type of show and I find it far superior.

Watamote just didn't hit home with me at all. I've dropped it after the first episode. I didn't find it funny, I found it extremely depressing. It's surprising accurate on how kids in high school treat recluses like Tomoko. I just pity her and it's not fun to watch at all.

I for one just can't relate with her whatsoever, I was never a recluse and was always very social. So watching her is just painful. And she isn't like Hachiman, who actually sees people for who they are and is actually kind of likable.

Watamote thinks looking at Tomoko fail and be miserable is funny, but I find it quite sad. I think trying to make a topic like that a comedy was just not a good idea. From the sound of it, the series just keeps this track going till the end so it's not even worth watching anymore. It's a story of a dark reality that is very real for some people and I just don't find it enjoyable. But I'll give it props for doing something different.

I just didn't really like the message it was trying to pull. I didn't want to laugh at her and I feel like that's what the creators wanted me to do.

Log Horizon for sure. It's brains vs action.

So, magi vs. Log Horizon. They're both good shows, but there's a few ways that LH really stands out from the pack, whereas Magi is just quite good.

First: Character

Log Horizon has a few of my favorite chars from last year, and is amazing for taking people you SHOULD hate (Minori, Rudy) and making them beloved and interesting and making you only hunger for more. Minori's arc is the one story from last year I'd want my daughter to watch (if I had a daughter). She goes from admiration to skill, and doesn't allow herself to be limited by Shiroe while still maintaining a realistic admiration and even love for him. She's really top notch.

Rudy is Similar. When you first see him he's just really really really annoying. He's such a powerful and identifiable MMO player trope it's easy to just slot him. His story is so great, I honestly dont' wanna spoil it for people who haven't watched the show, so let me just say they turn it around. And they turn it around brilliantly. If you're watching the first time, there are plenty of clues if you're aware of them. I've never seen a character go from hated to loved quite so quickly.

And finally, there's one of the most interesting Protagonists of the year (poor Hajime) in Shiroe. He breaks all of the Insertion fantasy and normal fantasy tropes for the main character. He's not a strong combatant, but he's smart... He's not socially very skilled, but he has amazingly sharp judgement and a really good heart. Most importantly, he beats things, not with Deus ex Machinas or Cheat Codes, but with planning and strategy and insight.

He's what a hero should be, and shows us a character that can actually change a world for the better.

Second: World

Log Horizon puts way more effort into meaningful pieces of its backstory than most shows. It's setting is of course a game, but unlike most of the games, it's a game with *real* rules that you can recognize and see yourself playing. Maybe more importantly, it's a world with a culture that anyone who's ever played a MMO immediately recognizes. A lot of games use the setting as just kind of a background, but in LH the world is as big a character as any of the people.

What's more, it's a world you think you can figure out. There was an infinite amount of fun to be had in the discussion during the show's run, with us as watchers coming together and trying to piece together the bits of the puzzle we were given, and having that utterly amazing feeling when we realized we were right. Very few shows can pull that off, but Log Horizon certainly did.

Third: Themes

This is a big one, and a weird one, but it's really important to me. Log Horizon (as I said above) shows us a real hero to emulate. He's not granted plot armor to kill the big bad, he uses the skills he has to improve the situation around him, and has the foresight and planning to do amazing things with those skills. Instead of punching out the badguy who's abusing kids, he changes the system so such abuses can't happen anymore. It's a powerful lesson, and a valuable one. Similarly, in one of my favorite lines of the year we have a character who's had their heart broken (being careful of spoilers here) realize that 1) Yes they're suffering, 2) Yes it's okay to feel pain, 3) No it's not a problem that has to dominate her life or her relationships. It's just something to deal with and overcome. That's another amazing, and simple lesson.

A bit about Magi

I don't want anyone to get me wrong, I enjoyed magi a lot. But it's just so... standard. Alibaba does his Jungian trip, Morgiana is hot and exotic, Alladin is silly but powerful, Sinbad is mega-powerful and morally ambivelent. It's all done amazingly well, and it's production values blow LH out of the water, but I feel that Log Horizon has a spark and uniqueness that Magi lacks.

Similarly the world. It's a pretty standard fantasy Setting. You have plucky kingdom that wants to become a democracy, threatening giant empire, mysterious evil magic guys. It's all engaging and well done, but it's not new, and it doesn't show you much you haven't seen.

This is going to hurt me I feel.

Magi all the way

I feel in love with this anime, found it's manga and fell more in love. Morgiana for the win! It has great action and much feels. And has a good political nature with the kingdoms.

Magi

log horizon pretty much lost my vote during the last couple of episodes. i like the fable that magi displayed plus magical world for the win. didn't enjoy the first half but the second half wrapped it up nicely for me.

Log Horizon gets my vote not only because I haven't seen Magi, but because I like the characters and the world building.
