I don't think it's meant so much as a style for the others either, but more to show that characters have other things on their mind while still playing the game. What that something is may relate to the moment or it may be something deeper like I feel is the case with Chihaya in many of those shots. Maybe some are mentally prepping for the match and seem aloof for it, but really are getting focused for the sounds of the poems in their head.

Strategy plays a big part in matches as well, so it could also be them scanning the field while simultaneously recalling strategy or certain memory techniques. There's also the opposite, someone being very focused on the match to then take a breather and look up and around at their teammates' or opponents' matches or their supporters in the room. I recall several instances where they were very focused and tense only to break out of that tension and see what was happening around them in the room. When they get very focused on their match it can be like they are in a whole other world and shut out the distractions around them. Or the opposite where the distractions keep them from focusing on the playing field.

In the first pic she looks very focused on scanning the playing field while also thinking about something else, perhaps strategy or her expectations for the match. Taichi is coming out his concentration to notice something going on around him in the room in the second pic. The person in the third pic is clearly looking at someone with an intimidating scowl or frustrated face from across the room.

Thanks for trying to convince me, but I… just can't... get over it. There are so many ways to draw anime eyes, but this is the first time I couldn't stop seeing them… staring at my forehead. Luckily, it didn't break the series, and I found it to be pretty damn good.

My vote goes to Chihayafuru. I felt so immersed in the world of Karuta and the Ogura Hundred Poets. No one can watch Chihayafuru without ever noticing and feeling the passion of the characters! This "crimson passion" drives the story so intriguing and intense! Each of the characters are wonderfully portrayed with distinct personality, yet all of them have one similar interest - karuta. I absolutely love the music and visual too, and the frequent use of red-orange-yellow (bright) colours make the art so beautiful. Overall this josei series is just impressive! I really enjoyed watching the characters embracing their passions in life and embark on the journey to pursue their dreams.

My Vote: Chihayafuru 2

I went back and forth with this pick. But in the end, the game action and the strong development through competition proved to be the deciding factor. There was great development in Silver Spoon as well, but only the MC was really developed from that season. I was thinking Silver Spoon simply because things progressed to slowly with this season of Chihayafuru, but it served a purpose

I'm pretty sure the deadline expired a few hours ago, so I don't think any more votes will be counted at this point.

Kill la Kill

There was simply no reason to hate the over the top ridiculousness from the same guys that brought us Gurren Lagann. And as a standalone series, it didn't even need the boost. Most of the hate against this anime that I saw, was misguided to say the least. I will leave with the standard phrase: "it was part of the plot!"

My vote goes to Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan had a strong start and managed to keep me at the edge of my seat throughout the whole season.Even though the characters isn't where this series shine but they pulled a hell of a story with this one. The music and animation was top notch as well and I think is one of the greatest anime ever.

Loved both, which ever wins I will be happy, may the one with the least hate win! Good luck :D
I will vote if it gets close, until then I just want to see the rationality of those who might have hated either.

KILL LA KILL

I enjoyed this series a lot. Even though it went all over the place, it finished its story. We left a cliff hanger for Attack on Titan and for that reason I have to vote for Kill la Kill
