Ecchi and fanservice are NOT the same thing.

Both have been around for a long time, since the start of anime and before there was anime.

I don't think animes have become more ecchi, I think there are more ecchi animes. I remember some ecchi stuff dating back to the mid 90's. I am sure there were some before that, they weren't prevalent however.

The reason for the increase in ecchiness is that the primary supporters of anime and otaku culture are heterosexual males between the ages of 18 and 50 who are likely to be single.
