After reading all the complaints about the new app I decided to stream from there instead of my blu-ray player . Long initial load time , then to queue . Picked Samurai Bride & started to watch ...had to buffer first then started playing just fine...for 1:24 then it started to loop . It did it several times until it straightened itself out & started playing again...until it started to buffer again. ....got out of app & ran a speed test on my internet . Speed is at my max download speed (6M) . Final conclusion : Yea we finally got HD ! But at a major sacrifice . And that's not including the new interface (it doesn't bother me) , it's as if the player cannot handle the bitstream from CR or just poor coding . Roku's 1 & 2 are single core processors but can handle 1080P just fine (NF , Amazon Prime , Hulu+) but not CR . Hopefully a patch will be coming or the only short -term fix is to lower you resolution in User Preferences at the web site . I have multiple devices so I don't have to do that . I feel everyone's pain now ...

"The Crunchyroll App on Roku is better than ever!"

General Motors here. We came to your house in the middle of the night and stripped down your car, slashed your tires, and spray painted a middle finger on it. It's better than ever!

I am among the chorus of people disliking the latest Roku CR app.

I considered dropping my membership until this app is made usable again as the Roku is my main choice for CR (I also use my Android tablet).

However, in light of all this I decided to go back to a method of viewing CR that I rarely use.

PLEX Media Server - https://plex.tv/ BTW Plex is FREE!

I have this installed on my PC for viewing my own videos and music. There is also the ability to install 'channels'

Here is a link to a user developed CR channel for Plex - https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/73626-rel-crunchyroll-plugin/

Even after the update to CR's Roku app and Plex's Roku app this channel works wonders. Want to view the items in your queue? No problem. Want to skip around the episodes in your queue, no problem. Want to view the anime based upon the video settings you selected for your account on your computer (i.e. HD or SD), no problem. Want to change the video playback quality for each episode you watch? No problem.

While this Plex solution is not perfect, it is so far superior to CR's new Roku app.

Just install the Plex server on your PC and then download and install the files for the CR channel. restart the Plex media server. Add the Plex channel to your Roku (it is in the channel store), launch it and sign into your CR account. Bingo!

CR is lucky there are workarounds to the cluster f**k that was thrust upon us Roku users. Hopefully CR will do a rollback until the changes to the new app to make it usable as a Roku app are really tested and complete.

Good luck CR I think you will need some after the backlash.

P.S. There is also another solution but is not as well done. If you are a user of the media server product PlayOn - http://www.playon.tv/playon there is a plugin for CR. It is very basic and does not support the CR queue, but it is better in navigating episodes than the current CR Roku app. The PlayOn script is downloadable from a script site. It is user created - http://www.playonscripts.com/?w=view&id=168

Again, not as good as Plex especially as PlayOn has a cast involved. But it is an option.

This update has made the app practically unusable. Being able to browse through episodes for series in the queue is gone, now I have to search for the series again and then browse episodes. The option of starting from the beginning or starting from where you left off is gone. The ability to skip ahead or back and select which scene of the episode you want to watch is gone, forcing you to use a fast forward/rewind feature that doesn't work properly and leaves you totally blind as to where you resume playing. Finally at the end of the episode, because of the changes to episode selection, I am forced to either fast forward through the credits, then close and reopen the app to get it to update to the next one in the queue, or search for the series and find the next episode and select it.

Please, Crunchyroll, bring back the old app. Putting up with this garbage isn't worth paying for.

I'm happy to now get HD quality, but not at the expense of a user friendly menu system. I hate the ps3/ps4 menu system, and that's why I always opted to watch crunchyroll on my roku. Now I'm given a broken ps3/ps4 menu clone that barely works. Please switch back to the old menu, or fix were we can't watch old episode from our queues. Oh and allow use to leave a blank query to search. Some people do like to do a general search on just a type a genre.

I'm also really unhappy with the loss of functionality in the update. The biggest problem is no longer being able to skip around to different episodes in my queue, but its also generally harder to use for reasons that everyone else has already pointed out.

I liked the way the old CR app worked better. The new app doesn't work for me at all. Is there a way to go back to the old app?

so I finish watching one episode, there is one after, but I cannot watch it until I go search for the anime instead of looking at it in my queue, it should do it automatically just like before... also no abilities to watch a previous episode from the queue? for that matter why have a queue if this is going to happen...

It seems like they gave Zero thought to how people actually used the Roku app and why it was popular despite not offering HD.

I can see why Roku rejected their first attempt ... if it was even worse than this, it would have been basically unworkable.

Ah, but we increased the horsepower 20%. Note that to get the increase in horsepower you must get used to hooking your foot under the gas pedal and pulling up, as we decided to change the gas pedal user interface.

You actually had me hopeful there for a minute... Sure, there are a couple niceties here and there, the POP category, for instance (But Drama is missing). And, yes, the resolution selection based on your profile settings, and even being selectable by episode, that's cool.

And it has optional autoplay (which works correctly, but only if you don't do it in the queue). That's kind of nice, actually. But to balance that, there's no "add to queue" or "remove from queue" anywhere.

And the interface is simple, intuitive and hierarchical; rather than remembering to use specific buttons, it's almost all the Roku "feel" with up, down, left, right, OK, and back.

But the queue isn't functionally any better. It just allows selection of the most current episode for playing for each series, including the black box which doesn't play. it's still not a "show" queue, it's an "episode" queue, which is really the biggest deal breaker with the new CR app as well. (autoplay advances to the next current show in your queue, not to the next episode in the same series)

The app itself is pretty cool, there are lots of, um, "interesting" channels available. But I got a message about it being free for 30 days only when I added it; it looks like after that you have to subscribe to keep using it. I guess I'll wait it out and see. Autoplay might make it worthwhile for me.

I noticed this last night when my Roku 2 made me reauthorize it with Crunchyroll, and with 17 pages of replies already, I hope you'll forgive me for not reading everything in this thread before posting. I have to say I'm a little disappointed with the change. Opening the app seems slower than before, all I see on the left menu is Queue and History, and can't figure out how to get to the menu items along the top so I can't do things like browse or search, and the queue does not appear to scroll from to the first item when you hit the last or vice versa. Am I missing something here, or does this new version of the Crunchyroll Roku app have less features than the previous version? Typically, I'm just watching the current episode from my queue, so these aren't huge problems for me, but should I want to do more than that, I think the app is going to be difficult to work with. Does anyone have some work-arounds, know if additional updates are planned, or if I'm simply missing something? Any advice you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hit [Play] ... that brings up the menu, then [right] [left] [OK] as normal when in the menu.

If browsing, note that fast-forward and rewind page by letter and [right] and [left] by episodes starting with that letter.

This new setup is terrible! I don't mind having to watch more commercials than I did before but the new Roku format is horrendous. I no longer know if I have watched an entire episode in my queue or if I stopped it at the end credits. I have to either watch 4 commercials to see I'm at the credits or just assume I watched an episode and move on the the next. The previous format was all around superior in both usability and info. provided to the viewer. I truly feel the aggravation may not be worth it when there are so many other providers out there. I've been a user of Crunchyroll for years and you may have just "Jumped the shark" in my book. I only use my Roku box for Crunchyroll and you may have just given me a reason to sell both of them. Explain to me one improvement, that I am not aware of, of this format over the previous, that is to my advantage not yours, and I will reconsider. Good luck. By the way, whoever sold you on this idea should either be fired or promoted to director of sales since they could sell crap to anyone.

With the new update, anything we try to watch doesn't completely load; we can't watch anything. Update, power down, and restart didn't help.

Like many others have stated before, the new UI is not user friendly, and the loss of the series menu options is a shame.

Please fix.

Thanks for the information. I was clearly missing something in the case of the top menu, as I didn't expect "Play" to be used for something other than play/pause, like it's marked. I thought that the asterisk key might activate the menu, because I know it's used elsewhere in Roku to activate additional non-obvious options (like moving channels around, IIRC). So I think using Play/Pause to pull up a menu is an unusual choice, but at least now I know that it does that and can access the other major features of the app.
