I dislike the new setup as well. There's no star rating anymore. I relied on the star rating system to skip the crappy new shows and go straight to the good ones. There's no genre section. Lately I've been watching mostly sports anime, so that feature was important to me. Oh and lets say I want to watch the latest episode of an anime, well I would have to scroll forward.........and forward until I finally reach it to click it. I can't scroll backwards anymore to instantly get to the list of latest episodes. The fast forwarding is irritating too. It no longer shows thumbnails when fast forwarding. I used this feature to skip the anime intro and go straight to the show or rewind back to a hilarious point in the anime. I don't like the way they placed the ads either. Now instead of one short ad in the beginning we get three. So if I rewind or fast forward does that mean I have to see the same ad again? The old system was a lot better. There wasn't much to improve. The only improvement I wanted personally was full episode descriptions. The old system and new system both have descriptions that trail-off and aren't fully described.

The Plex server is free. The Android app for Plex does cost. The Roku app is free. PlayOn is not free. Also, I didn't imply these would give all functionality just some that people might find better than the current CR Roku app. The best thing with the Plex channel is the ability to access the individual episodes of a series and to actually see your queue of shows. Navigation is the biggest issue with the new CR Roku app.

Options, that is all they are. Better than what we have now for a Roku app.

I have one last comment for the CR people who I'm sure aren't paying attention to our concerns. Remember when Netflix tried to make stupid poorly thought out changes. They expected to loose 150,000 members, which was a calculated risk they where willing to take. When 800,000 jumped ship they learned their lesson. How many will CR need to loose before admitting to an obvious error. Maybe we're speaking to the wrong people. Maybe we should also be contacting Roku with our reasons for no longer needing their media player. CR Admins, don't "wait it out to see what happens." Just admit your error right away and avoid a huge loss of viewership. Advertisers don't like when there's no one watching and members don't like to pay for things that make them irritated.

Update: Just contacted Roku. I'll let you know if there is a reply. In the meantime, contact them yourselves.

I like to browse through shows that I don't know or that are new to me based off which show genre categories they are in. With the new update on the Roku app I have found that I can't do this unless I click on the genre types I want and also write a show title in the search box (won't work unless search box has a title)... it would be nice if all I had to do is click a genre is the search and have all the shows associated with the genre I choose to pop up with out typing a title in the search box. There are other issues but this one is my main complaint. If this had app had updated before my trial version (which I feel was worthless now because I continued my subscription based off liking the old app not this one now) had expired on the 10th I would have canceled the subscription and deleted the app off my player.
I might still do once it gets closer to the next bill date if the app is still how it is now. Appearance wise it may look better but functionality wise its not as good as the older version. I rather functionality over appearance anyday.
Please fix and go back to the older version until you work out these kinks.

Dronak wrote: So I think using Play/Pause to pull up a menu is an unusual choice, but at least now I know that it does that and can access the other major features of the app.

Not only is it an unusual choice, but you look at the [Play] key, and you look at the orange icon for main menu ... and they do not look the same. SO it clearly not any users fault for being confused how their confusing system works.

They didn't even look at the controller when they designed the icon to match the button.

If they HAD used the [*] key, not only would it be clearer which button was being used, but then they could use the [Play] button to PLAY the episode in the queue and the [OK] button to got into an episode list for that series.

And then over half of the most serious complaints would not be happening.

my 2 cents - clearly didn't employ any sort of user experience people when designing. Runs afoul of most UI standards used by other roku device apps. And it probably wasn't end user tested at all. Lots of simple bugs. Rushed out, most likely.

I'll use it - begrudgingly. And shake my head disapprovingly at the amateurs who produced this app. I'd prefer if a 2nd private channel were deployed with the old app as an alternative, tho.

THE NEW UPDATE ON ROKU SUCKS!
I had to re-log in with my account, once that was done. . .
It's a pain in the ass to search for your shows, and once you find them, it does not queue them up to the next episode.
Before the update there was 1 commercial, then you'd watch your show, and the next show in the queue was up.

Now there's 5 commercials in the beginning, and 4-6 more commercials in the middle of the show. Then once the show's over it DOES NOT GO/QUEUE TO THE NEXT EPISODE!
You have to dick around with the new stupid updated format, that does not work properly. I was on episode 26, I wanted to watch episode 27. I couldn't I had to go back to the main menu, search alphabetically for my show, then scroll to 26 episodes to reach 27. By the time I got through doing all that (5min. later) I had to wait for 5 commercials, then finally the theme song/intro to the show. Then, right after the theme/intro another 4-6 commercials.
WHAT THE HELL?!!!
You have to push the 'play' button to get the main menu, then push 'up' to go the next episode? Yeah right! the 'play button' menu works, but not the next episode button.

I'm not liking this new update. I hate to complain because I love CR and am a subscriber, but I much prefer the previous format to this new one. Please Crunchy Roll, change it back.

I don't mind a commercial or 2, but once you've jumped through all the hoops to get to your show, on a specific episode you gotta wait for advertisements. Breaks down like this:

1. Find 'show' and proper episode you left off on. 3-5min.
2. Sit through 4-6 commercials/advertisements. 3-5min.
3. Sit through theme song. 1:30min.
4. Four to six more advertisements/commercials 3-5min.
5. Alas! The Show, but wait half way thru. . . More advertisements/commercials 3-5min.
6. End credits, then. . . More advertisements/commercials 3-5min.
7. Then the episode wrap up or previews for the next episode.
APPROXIMATELY 15 1/2 minutes to 25 1/2 minutes on advertisements/commercials. . . On a 22min. Show, making it a 40min.-55min show.

Please for the love of all that is holy revert back to the old ROKU app. I have an older Roku and now I can't watch CR on it anymore. Aside from the obvious problems that other people have voiced about the navigation, the older Roku remote doesn't have all the buttons the new one does. I don't have a * button. Also the video playback is artifacting and looks like crap. There are streaky little horizontal lines everywhere. This is not an issue with my Roku as I can watch videos on the funimation app and netflix just fine. I did not have any of these problems with the old CR Roku app either.

One of the most amazing things about the old app was the frame by frame tracking in video. It made it super fast and easy to skip through the opening sequence, and to see if there was anything extra at the end of the video. That appears to be gone now, unless there's some other way to access it...

What have you done!! Please CR screw your heads back on and fix this crap. Maybe consider doing some QA testing next time.

My Queue is completely useless. It won't let me navigate between episodes. I have to go to the search to be able to watch the next episode in my queued series. Why do we even have a queue anymore?!?! Why would you do that Crunchyroll? The app worked great before. Now I'd almost rather sit at my desk and watch anime than navigate this nightmare. Please stop this madness.

Cry me a river.

I want Crunchyroll's Boxee app back, but I'm SOL. About all the Boxee Box is good for now is a $200 paperweight or bookend.

You can exit the app and come back in, then the next episode will have advanced. Kind of a pain, but better than searching...

User experience update 2:
Others have mentioned these, but I wanted to document that it's not just them:

1. long load times
2. streaking, pixellating, smearing of images
3. stutter and jump -- repeated the same 5sec clip four times, jumped back to the OP, and then ...
4. rebooted my Roku
5. The app breaks the Roku screen saver. Gives just a blank screen. I know we don't need screen savers any more, but now I can't tell if the TV is off, or just resting.
6. long recovery from FF/RW. As if it really wanted to just play that scene in the background until it caught up
7. can't jump back to the start of a program, have to rewind, like it was a tape, except that a tape would start right up and not make me wait
8. can't rewatch a previously watched program without treating it like a brand new series. I can't even 'continue' from one previously watched episode to the next previously watched episode.
9. Roku buttons don't act like the buttons do on the other Roku channels, and the use of the buttons is inconsistent even within CR.
10. In many cases, the easiest thing to do is go to my PC, call up the CR browser, find out my information there, then go back to the Roku and proceed.

Many of these things aren't in the "here's a bug" category. Many of them CR put in by design. If I'm mentioning them it's because they are really irritating to the user. No, sorry, THEY ARE REALLY IRRITATING TO THE USER.
