New Roku Update!

Went from a slow but simple interface with one ad up from to a slow and confusing interface with 8 ads spread throughout the episode. Having the extra ad blocks wouldn't be so bad if they were timed with the original commercial breaks. But they seem to run either a few seconds early, or a few seconds late. Having the dialog interrupted mid-sentence is jarring and can break the show.

Also, assigning strange functions to various ROKU buttons makes it feel like a poorly programmed universal remote.

I have requested support for the mis-timed ad blocks. Until they are resolved, I will likely not be using CR for my entertainment.

All I know was it was only 480p. But the UI was one of my favorite on the different channels I've had on the Roku .. including Netflix and HBO2Go.

I read somebody saying that is a bug, and not a design flaw. For free members, I hope that they fix it, because keeping free members coming back is where new subscribers come from. And new subscribers is what keeps more series coming to Crunchyroll.

The thing is: there are enough buttons to do what is needed without using any of them in bizarre ways:

Make the Menu button the [*] button. After all, sometimes the [*] button actually is used for a side menu. Nobody uses the [>||] play button for a menu. Seriously!

Now [Play] is free, use it to PLAY the episode starting at the current point.

Now [OK] is free, use it to ENTER the episode list starting at the current episode according to the queue.

Oh, and [O] is not used, and the other function taken away was play from the beginning, so add [O] to play from the beginning.

Notice that the exact same functions make sense for the watch history: [Play] takes you to where you last watched (if you had to bail out of a show), [O] plays the show from the beginning, [OK] goes into that show's episode list, which you can use to marathon a show you tried out and liked.

The new app is terrible. It seems like everything was made more difficult, the queue is useless for moving back and forth among episodes in a series, and it looks like a crappy version of the xbox Netflix app. There was no reason to change the app, it was one of the simplest best laid out apps that I have used on the Roku period.

Is there any way to go back to the previous version of the app?

That's how I feel. But then again I'm in a super minority here as someone who has always been pretty happy with the old app. The queue is really bothering me right now and I already miss the thumbnails, and it took me longer than I care to admit to figure out that I needed to use the play button to navigate to the menu.. Sad to say this UI feels even less intuitive than Funimations app.


I definitely agree the new app may be cleaner visually, that means nothing if it doesn't have the functionality to compliment it. I haven't even figured out to add shows to my queue on the new app yet. And I feel like I'm playing an mmo with all the new control buttons now.

in addition to all the other issues i have reported. You are unable to navigate the item in the que. and when you view the episode it is displaying it does not update it so if you want to watch more than one of the same show you have to ether search for it or leave the app completely. this upgrade was horrendously unfinished and should of under gone far more development before it was deployed.

Streaming Issues - "Video failed to connect or stuck at 'Connecting to Video Stream'..."

I am experiencing the top issue intermittently. Generally on shows not being simulcast.

Sometimes I also get a blank screen with a Bar at top of screen is all orange and I get prior to failure a timing reading of 00:22 / 00:15 plus or minus 10 seconds on each.

I experience the second in all shows after 1 minute of play time. The lines disappear on pause. I have no problems playing HD on Amazon and Netflix.

The new Roku updated app is a nightmare! I'm so pissed they changed the whole layout. They could have added the HD without changing everything. I will not renew my yearly membership once the current one is over!

Once I reactivated my devices, I'm now seeing occasional lines flashing on the screen that weren't there before and aren't there in the free version. It's not show/episode specific, it's happening with everything. Is there something in my settings I need to change? Also, there's an obviously slower load time now. I am REALLY not liking the update.
