You're missing the point. A majority of these people ( and I know from experience), will only watch those shows and maybe FMA brotherhood and soul eater. I know plenty of people who just watch that and never touch anime again because in their mind, nothing else lives up to what those shows offered.

I started watching anime because of Bleach back when I was still in middle school. I get you, but I still went on to explore other things. I didn't get highly offended when someone told me Bleach was awful. These people will tear you up if you even go as far as to offer some small form of criticism about either show.

Ok, I get what you're saying. Basically- weeabo's suck right? And I'm with you on that. They're the diseased part of the anime community that makes ordinary fans cringe and want to pretend they don't exist. They turn anime from being a source of entertainment to a source of cultural identity and it sometimes makes you want to deny your fandom altogether when in public. And worst of all, they never watch anything that's actually good! It's always all about being super obsessed with a small handful of series.

I think it's a stretch to say that the majority of SAO fans are weeabo's though. SAO didn't get me hooked on anime, but it did get me hooked on Crunchyroll. And I do consider myself a marginal fan as I found the anime to be above average. I don't think everyone should get thrown under the bus as weeabo scum.

Your scenario of the guy who likes anime but only saw SAO and Attack on Titan....sure it's a little fishy. But the guy really could just be starting out his anime journey and he may end up growing into being a great connoseiur of a variey of titles and genres.

Well I mean there's nothing wrong with being passionate about anime, but like you said, some people cross the line by making it a cultural identity. It ruins the point of anime, which is to entertain and offer discussion in communities such as this.

I think the anime is great too, definitely above average like you mentioned. Will Bob ever continue his anime journey or will it all fall to the ground? Find out on the next episode of Weeaboo: Nothing is better than SAO!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, you make some great points.

I always recommend SAO as a starting anime, it's really good if you don't have your standards set high by other anime. It's the same reason I like watching the movie before reading the book, the standard gets set too high.

Yes! I hated Suguha! Her love for Kirito was just unnecessary.

Spoiler tag for not spoiling everything -.-

Wow, that was a lot of text, was not my intention haha I need to do a TL;DR T_T

TL;DR: Flaws aren't everything, you can enjoy a show with flaws, but some are focused at that, which makes them not able to enjoy such a series.

I really enjoyed the first arc of SAO but I really think they just should have stopped after the first arc. What bothered me the most is the fact that instead of focusing fast paced action of the story, the anime instead began to focus more on the romantic relationships and turned the story into more of a harem anime than anything. All of the female characters were always pursuing after Kirito's love even when it was obvious that he didn't return their feelings. This alone made me stop watching the anime, because instead of having strong female characters like in the beginning all of the females became only focused on Kirito. It was just so annoying that I had to stop watching. If you enjoy SAO then that's totally fine and acceptable, but personally I can't stand it.

I always think "incest" is a pretty inappropriate way to describe what's going on there. *INCOMING FIRST SEASON SPOILERS*

I thought love was the correct way to describe Sugha's feelings towards Kirito. Though they're cousins, so it doesn't really count in my unholy opinion.

I have to say that SOA had a great start and that the first few episodes were the highpoint of the series. However the series could never deliver the promises that it gave us and instead it treated us to mediocre storytelling with high visuals and great music. The first arc is what most people loved about the show while the second arc is almost universally hated. Even the first arc there were problems that people are in my opinion too forgiving. The whole SAO arc was cut too short, there was too much filler, many characters were utterly pointless, the end was a complete cop out and the villain's motives remain an enigma. This anime is bad but I can see why it's for some a guilty pleasure.

I think it's tough to call something which is that statistically favorable "universally hated." I'm not going to dispute your points on ALO, that's your opinion and I also think that while very watchable and entertaining it is a bit weaker. And the numbers even show that since the anime has a slightly larger dropped rate then other series.

But it isn't so large as to diminish the fact that a massive amount of people watched the series to completion and rated it pretty high.

Anything over a 7 in all ratings can't be bad. I feel that 5-7 is mediocre, 8 is good, 9 is great, 10 is perfect.

I think that movies, books and computer games can be objectively good or bad however the enjoyment thereof is a matter of taste. Therefor many people can enjoy SAO yet it still fails in many categories which does give it merit to be hated.
