I think the bigger question is why do you care. All of the big shonen anime get this treatment. I love Naruto and DBZ to death, but I am not going to pretend they aren't formulaic and one dimensional. Liking SAO doesn't make you a simpleton, nor does hating it make you some kind of anime snob. The criticisms of the show are valid, but if you like it , you like it. Going back to DBZ I love it, especially the Funimation DUB. I still squee like a little kid whenever I watch Goku transform to SSJ for the first time, the finger-sword fight between goku and trunks, gohan transforming at the world tournament. The entire series can be boiled down to the same thing, baddy appears, everyone but goku fails, goku saves the day, the only time this is messed with is Cell and goku set it up that way on purpose. But as I said, none of this detracts from my enjoyment of the series. Making these threads makes it seem like you are insecure about your like of SAO and need to defend it.

As in most things, the minority shouts the loudest, and the people who enjoy it don't feel a need to say it.

You have a good point.

Also, OP! Why do you care if people like it or not? Just ignore them.

My biggest reason for hating SAO is the main character. Kirito is super badly written overpowered Gary Stue, and when you have no sympathy for empty-I-can-do-anything-character it's really hard to like the series. Especially because Kirito is the main character.

SAO looks nice and I love the visual style of it. I was originally interested about it only because of Yuki Kajiura's music, so I wasn't really motivated to watch it in the 1st place.

But I can still see why people like SAO. It looks nice, it has lots of action, and well, even though Kirito is Gary Stue and Mr. Power Fantasy, many people tend to like that kind of character. For me, it seems just like a 14-year-old writing a fanfic if I encounter that kind of characters in the series.

Why do people keep asking "OP, why do you care?" It's a dang discussion, they are interested in why there seems to be so much hate surrounding this particular show, more so than others.

he really isnt that powerful of a character when you are an actual gamer and know how video games work, then you can understand....he just really is one of the best, along with Asuna and Klein and some of the other "floor clearers"..he was given a special skill but it was unknown who had other special skills as that could have been any of the 7000 who survived SAO (i think i read somewhere or in the LN that there were like 10 special skills in existence?)...He was a good player but he was not "overpowered"..if you watched GGO and the end of the 2nd season then you know he isnt overwhelmingly tough at all IRL...and in the game he is just a smarter player than the others who use brute force...but he does lose in later arcs (yes kirito loses sword fights to other better players)

it's this simple... because people are stupid. they jump on bandwagons and come to the rally cry of others and try to "join" movements that don't matter.

if you like it, watch it... if you don't, I don't give a *uck

I don't hate SAO, but it could have been much better. For me, it started off well, but just really went south. The second half (ALO) was so much worse than the first. Take Asuna, who is a kick ass nearly equal character and make her helpless. Add in an over the top unrealistic enemy you have to hate. Add almost tentacle rape scene and an actual attempted rape scene? Oh I forgot add incest subplot as well.. Yeah, SAO Part 2 was horrible.

Kirito does not improve or grow as a character. He is your all knowing infallible hero who is so bland it hurts. Gary Stue for real. He has all the characteristics of a shut-in but with none of the social issues that would go with that. Seems we keep getting shows with this kind of mc now, AnZ, Irregular...

I really liked Sword Art Online until the second half. Surprise Sister Complexes do not entice me. And Watching Asuna go from a complete badass girl to a damsel in distress so quickly was heart-wrenching. Introducing possibly new awesome characters that get less than half an episode of screentime and no development whatsoever. It went downhill so fucking fast it was incredible. And Kirito was as bland and tasteless as most shounen protagonists. Klein would have definitely made a better protagonist. Or even a great partner. But he lacked screentime as well. Does anyone get screentime aside from Kirito, Asuna, and Leafa? But most of all...

I cant listen to Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer without exploding in feels.

People hate on it because they either don't like certain aspects of the anime, or they just hate it because it's popular. Not to mention the fanbase is terrible because if you say one little thing bad about Sword Art Online, you'll get devoured; they'll say you're wrong and just trash on you and your opinion. Same thing happened to me when I said SNK wasn't good because I didn't like most aspects of the anime. What happened? I got attacked by the fanbase because the fanbase for SNK is just as bad as SAO's.

If you dislike it, okay. But why feel the need to tell everyone about it? It's utterly stupid and pointless in my opinion. I for one love it, but you could probably have guessed that already hah.

It is not pointless to debate the relative merits of something. New perspectives may be bred from such discussion, and it is possible to walk away with concrete examples of why something succeeds or fails.

It is only at the end of day when, with all the facts presented, your evaluation differs from mine should we feel obliged to cut off the discussion as a difference of opinion.

If you take everything discussed and feel the the strengths outweigh the flaws, that is different from my evaluation, but I will never argue you are wrong. In the meantime, this discussion helps get the proponents and opponents of this work on the same page, ensuring we are watching the same show.

Enjoyment is a different matter entirely. I love Sword Art Online precisely because it utterly fails in so many storycrafting elements.
