Before this show, the main "MMO" type anime was Dot Hack, and it was a fucking fantastic anime with one of the best soundtracks ever fucking conceived.

I personally don't enjoy it because its boring. The main character is stupidly powerful, and even breaks the own anime's rules. I couldn't make myself finish the whole thing because of how boring it was, and that's coming from someone who has watched One Piece.

Rules. Your universe needs rules, and those rules need to be obeyed, if you break a rule - it should accomplish something. Sword Art will literally pull new rules out of a hat randomly and just throw "dis is a game" on top of it. It is really annoying.

I see this kind of argument pretty regularly - SAO, and indeed Accel World, is actually pretty consistent when it comes to its in-universe rules but those rules aren’t necessarily what some people want or expect the rules of a video game based narrative to be. I’ve put the rest of the point in spoiler tags as, although I won’t reference it specifically, what I’m about to talk about is a major part of Alicization.

All of that said, much as I love SAO, personally I would prefer it if the in-universe rules were different but that’s just a matter of taste.

for me I just don't like the cheesy romance between Kirito and Asuna.

None of the characters are great in my opinion, but the writing is unforgivably bad at times as I've stated here.

I know 6 month old comment, but THIS. I was loving the show up to the sudden and inexplicable ending of the 1st arc, they had built up Asuna to be this super powerful warrior who was 3rd rank leader of the most powerful force in SAO... and then suddenly Alfheim she's nothing but a helpless birdie in a cage for the male hero to pursue and rescue because she can't possibly do it herself.
I have nothing against damsel-in-distress plot if that's what something is, but don't make a strong character and as soon as you have enough fans, tear her down to being a helpless waif just because fanservice. And that's pretty lousy fanservice, so I disliked the ALO arc due to that.
I guess calling the Yui thing creepy is a bit harsh, but I didn't care for her either and feel like her abrupt introduction was just done to give Kirito and Asuna an easy cheat to use whenever stuff gets complicated. In otherwords, I found her inclusion to be lazy, and cheesy.

However nothing I said above means I 'hate' SAO, I've watched two full seasons of it in a few weeks and enjoy it overall.

I think the main problem people have with SAO is PACING. i mean come on. The chunk of the story is 2 years later. BUT i feel like people forget how beneficial this is to the story line. OF COURSE we miss out on important character development moments but they were trapped in the game for what? 5 years? HOW TF COULD AN ANIME COVER THAT AMOUNT OF TIME^^^^
Needless to say these transitions could have been a lot smoother-but in my opinion they assisted in getting to the main juice of the story.

Kirito is also a pretty bland character, and Asuna is sooooo much like Kirito. They both have a similar drive and morality.
Howevver, this makes it possible for more people to feel connected to the characters. It also gives them both a diversity???

Those are some of my biggest complaints, and complaints i have heard from other people.

DONT GET ME WRONG>
I personally love SAO. It is a nice wholesome anime with SOME lewd moments and ya know, slight savage violence brought to us by PKers. Laughing Coffin drove the entire series in my opinion.

HOW IS THE MANGA? I just got in to reading manga.

The rematerialize thing never actually happened . It was basically a copy and paste scene from like epiosde 1 or 2 with the boar

She couldn't do it by herself it was pretty much set up that she's basically just a human in a game . And stabbing people dosnt make her stong . It's her behavior and personality what little we knew of it at the time. And it's not like she just sat around doing nothing.

Soley for the fanbase not so much the show itself. Fans demanding more on something that should've been acknowledged dead years ago. Now it's gonna fall into the out of ideas pit for the few people instead of letting it age in peace.

"Why do people hate on Sword Art Online?"

I hate it because the story failed Asuna so so much. She started out as a great character, and then she got damseled. It happened not in the Alfheim arc, as some people claim, but around halfway in the first season. And then in Alfheim, where something could've been redeemed, they basically catered to the sex slave fantasy.

What a piece of shit.

Asuna starts out promising and gets thrown in the refrigerator.
Anytime they do that to a character, I immediately tune out.

To be fair I really enjoyed the first 13 episodes, even bought tons of merch for it at various cons. The problem was I thought it could have concluded perfectly after the 13th episode, but it kept going and I just lost interest almost immediately.

I'll admit, I never got into the anime after the first episode either. The whole premise of how they got trapped in the game seemed too ridiculous to me to actually make me think "hey, this might actually be possible". When I saw that the game creator decided to hold people playing the game hostage without realizing how bad the real world consequences would be, that in itself made me lose interest in the anime.

The author doesnt know how to write a coherent story.

Episode 23 of alicization threw my suspension of disbelief out of the window. Two things died for no reason, an a character morphed for no reason... out of nowhere... just like someone pulled it out of their butt and the entire ending pissed me off to the point of actually irritating me for wasting 24 episodes on this stupid story.

It like every other sao season starts off strong and then gets nonsensical and hackish the more you get into it. The only SAO arc that I truly loved was the sick girl Arc.
