I like Chiyo. I thought she was a pretty good takeoff on a shoujo heroine and I loved how she stuck to her manga fantasies despite what reality threw her way. Reminded me of some people.

Buuuuut.... Meruem was really a feat. He was handicapped with unfortunate DBZ-inspired looks so bad his love interest had to be blind to make it believable and started out in the world as a ruthless killing machine and megalomaniac. There were times at this arc when you genuinely could not predict what he would do because he was in a constant state of change. And despite starting out as loathsome, by the end of the arc he became a sympathetic character.

Most main characters in manga never get as much thought and development as Meruem, let alone antagonists several arcs deep.

So, I'm voting for Meruem!

Conference Finals - Summer

Meruem is probably one of the best developed villains you'll ever see. He is born to be a ruthless leader for his race and his sole purpose is to expand his horizon and eventually dominate the world. He also happens to be one of the strongest living beings on the entire planet, so there's very few who could match his strength. At first you just hope that he'll get his ass kicked because he's absolutely terrible, unforgiving, and evil. Though, each day he gets more curious about the world and then takes an interest in games. He masters many games and he then calls upon some of the most skilled players in the world to face him in order to prove his superiority. There's one game in particular that grabs his attention (a HxH exclusive game that Togashi, the author, made himself) and calls upon the top player of the game; this player is Kogami. She happens to be a blind and fragile little girl who has nothing else in life than her skill for this game. She's a complete foil to Meruem. During their time together, Meruem can never beat her and eventually develops a bond with her. This girl ends up changing the most powerful, ruthless King in the world into someone who starts to appreciate life and then starts to actually think what's truly best for his people. Seeing Meruem's development was mind boggling and you may very well be in tears by the end of the Chimera Ant arc after seeing how far he's come.

Mereum (Hunter x Hunter) - I'm voting for Meruem because I like him. He has a well developed personal philosophy and a huge amount of self-confidence and mental stability. In regards to the love story, Meruem goes through a tragic inter-species battle as he recognizes that strength has more than one meaning, and despite people he trusts detesting and subverting his wishes, goes to extreme lengths to understand an enemy that both wants to hurt him and does hurt the one he loves.

Chiyo in contrast, is not nearly so tragic, but still quite the fun character.

I am voting for Meruem.

This is my vote

Meruem I wouldn't mind living in his dystopia for there's already so much corruption in the world that ridding the source of causality would naturally stabalize the neutrality focused on the objectivity the worlds ecology. I'm voting for Meruem because he truly wanted to save the world. <3 his character development too

Neat! Tell me more about him.

He also happens to be one of the strongest living beings on the entire planet, so there's very few who could match his strength.

Well, it wouldn't be as exciting if the main protagonist just walked up, kicked Meruem in the shin, and then Meruem just spent the rest of the scene sobbing uncontrollably and calling for his mother. There'd be nothing to build up to, no hill to overcome. The hero's journey would end right there. That'd be really funny, though.

At first you just hope that he'll get his ass kicked because he's absolutely terrible, unforgiving, and evil.

Hey, it's what the Big Bad does. If he's not considered an asshole he's doing something wrong.

*shrugs*

Sounds a lot like this other guy I know. His name's Sesshomaru.

Seeing Meruem's development was mind boggling and you may very well be in tears by the end of the Chimera Ant arc after seeing how far he's come.

I like your description, and I like Sesshomaru. Therefore I like Meruem. You've swayed me.

THIS IS MY VOTE

Mereum (Hunter x Hunter): I'm a real sucker for villains who, over the course of the story, soften up and start either assuming a lighter shade of grey or become grey to begin with. Meruem apparently does this, and in a similar way to that of a character I liked (even if he wasn't my favorite in that story by any means). Sakura is great as a voice of the audience and sticks with a lot of characterization tropes I like, but those tropes don't melt me like a villain progressively becoming at least somewhat less villainous.

I'm feeling really, really lazy right now so I'm just going to be very simple and brief.

Meruem (Hunter x Hunter): While I like that Chiyo is such a fun, excitable character, I liked even more that Meruem was a character that had more substance to him. I greatly enjoyed watching his development throughout the arc.

Meruem (Hunter X Hunter)

While I like Chiyo and think she's a good comedy character, Meruem is a much better character in comparison. Chiyo made me laugh quite a lot, but there are better comedy characters out there. (There are also better comedy anime out there but that's another debate for another time.) Heck, half the cast on Nozaki-kun are better characters than she is, imho. Meruem, otoh, has gone through such transformation that I couldn't help but sympathize with him on a deeper level. In my humble opinion, a good character should be able to move the audience like Meruem does. Chiyo has her moments, but at the end of the day, I can't call her the best character of the season.
