Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! is an experience. When I first saw it on the initial Winter 2015 anime chart, I instantly found myself intrigued. Magical boy anime? Sure, why not! It's not like magical girls aren't overly abundant or anything, right? Might as well try something different.

It's not different. It's the same. It's a magical girl anime, just with boys. I haven't yet decided whether I appreciate this fact or not. It's a parody of everything, particularly Sailor Moon (from the attacks, to the colors of the outfits they wear, to their enemies code names: Aurite, Argent, and Perlite), with a little bit of Cardcaptor Sakura mixed in for good measure.

To its credit, the show doesn't pull any punches. The transformation sequences are exactly what you'd see out of any magical girl show, not adjusted just because of their genders. This means you get the gratuitous leg shots and booty shorts for all. I'll admit, the first time they showed one of the characters from behind, it was the exact same angle as the typical sort-of upskirt shot, and I laughed at the fact you could see straight up his jacket. It really hits home just how utterly ridiculous these shows can be, sometimes. The boys get turned magical seemingly at random, like usual, (at first, anyway), and of course they have their enemies and attacks just laid out for them. (Though, 'something-or-other storm' and 'I am awesome fire' had me cracking up, for sure).

The characters themselves are all walking tropes. There's the 'regular' guy, the womanizer, the money-grubber, the... hot quiet one or whatever, that one's just a weirdo, and the shota. Then the enemies are princely and aristocratic, of course, because someone has to educate these bunch of misfits, don't you know. Wait, though, maybe the evil leader is just lonely! Maybe he can be moved by the power of friendship! I'm curious to see if this evolves at all as the show continues on; it's fairly obviously that it was probably done on purpose since, again, parody, but we'll see. There's also animal mascots! Super-important addition to any magical boy/magical boy team. I actually found the wombat a little grating, but I won't lie and say I don't think Thunder the green hedgehog with his hilariously deep voice isn't fun.

Watching this show is also a test in how many times they can say 'love' in one episode. I sincerely want to watch it again and count, it had to be fifty. The 'good' team is called the Battle Lovers, and that, along with all the other names, make you want to give yourself a continuous facepalm out of second-hand embarrassment. I mean this in the best way possible. Their transformation yell is 'Love Making', and they fight with a Love Stick. Let me repeat that. Love Stick. It shouldn't be that funny, but it really is, especially when you Google the show name and 'yaoi' is one of the first additions to the end of it.

If you have a sense of humor, I'd recommend watching Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! It really is genuinely funny, and it's sure to entertain you, especially if you're a fan of the magical girl genre in general. It airs Tuesdays at 1:40 PM, EST!

I never thought i would find a show that i hated and loved so much at the same time-

The characters are ridiculous and the plot just as much so. Yet somehow this mess of a show really cracks me up
