Rank the Characters!
Monster Musume (Bestgirl)
Metal Bat Award: That one couple that always shows up to make fun of the monster girls...
Diabolik Lovers (Bestguy)
Metal Bat Award: Could go to anybody but I pick the triplet's mom. She's easy to hate in the show but when I read on the wiki what she did to Laito when he was little... Man she's messed up. (And yeah some people might call me a hypocrite because my husbando did some pretty nasty things in his series too, but... what can I say? The heart wants what it wants.)
8. Thor, except in his relationship to Loki and Baldr. And when he's playing a tree.
Wooden spoon award: Hades. Awful one-note character. Yes, it is your misfortune, now go be unlucky somewhere else.
Spot-the-fluffy award: Anubis. There should have been more of him, omg.
DRAMAtical Murder (Bestguy)
1. Mink (A controversial choice, I know, but for some reason he became my husbando...)
Wooden/Metal Bat Award: None this time, because none of the characters stood out to me as being particularly easy to hate. (I already have the character that most people hate as my husbando...)
Fluffy Award: Sei. I really wish there had been more of him. Maybe he would have been my husbando instead of Mink if he had had more screen time. Who knows?
Genshiken and Genshiken 2
04. Shodai Kaichou
09. Kuchiki (Kuuchi)
Can we dance?
This one's tough to me. I think they're all the best but since i have to rank them, guess there's no choice. So, here we go.
The Silent Hero - A man of few words.
Magical Girl Raising Project
Ranking and Review!
At some point while I was watching this, I simply knew that I would have to make a character ranking for it. The show really lends itself to such an exercise. That being said, I also feel like expressing a few opinions about it. Thus, it seemed like a perfect excuse to dust off this Ranking and Review format.
Like my previous one, I must once again note that... oh, I guess I might as well just quote my previous one:
HOWEVER - I should note that i'm not one for formal reviews. I'll really be doing more of an "impression", but I liked the alliteration of "ranking and review" so I went with it!
Before I begin,, I would just like to point out that this show has some of the coolest names ever.
(Tie) Metal Bat:
Cait Sidhe's Curse:
The Musician of the Forest, Cranberry
Yunael and Minael
(With minimal spoilers. Spoiler tags primarily for space.)
Story and Setting
This show can very easily be described as a survival game featuring magical girls. I think it had decent execution, but being tied to these two genres introduced contrasting aspects that I felt really didn't mesh well. In the end, everything feels kind of pointless - as though everything that transpired was a massive waste of time and had no impact on anything. This may or may not be intentional on the part of the writers as a means of playing up the inhumanity of a survival game, but even so, it makes it difficult to find satisfaction within the show. Oftentimes it just feels like suffering for suffering's sake, which isn't as interesting or impactful as it sounds.
Visuals and Sound
I really have to praise the character and costume designs for this. Each character felt so unique and distinctly tied to their persona. The show is also quite easy on the eyes as well. It's just a joy to watch. Nothing phenomenal, and not a revolutionary art style, but for what it's trying to do, it does it fine.
Nothing really stands out to me in terms of audio (for better or worse). Nothing felt out of place, but nothing stood out to me either. However, both the OP and ED are quite good. The opening gets you hyped for the show, and the ending with its powerfully remorseful yet hopeful English lyrics is a contender for one of the best of the season (or it would be if it wasn't for Flip Flappers).
Overall, solid, but not noteworthy.
As someone who doesn't normally watch stories featuring survival games, I feel as though my impression of the characters is a bit negatively skewed. The show introduces all of these characters fully aware that it is going to kill off most of of them. It does its best to give each a reason to care about them, but at the end of the day, it clearly acknowledges that the majority of them are just cannon fodder. I don't want to say much here to avoid spoilers, but no matter who one gets attached to, it feels kind of pointless to invest in them due to the nature of a survival game.
Even so, I just found myself not caring about most of them. The variety means there will almost certainly be ones you like and ones you dislike as well. It feels like a lose-lose situation to me. They have to give screen time to characters I don't like, and the characters I do like are likely to just die anyway (This goes for all the characters). Feels like a recipe for annoyance to me.
But luckily, all the characters are somewhat entertaining to watch for one reason or another. Surprisingly, I just wish I had a little more of all of them, as I feel like none were really fleshed out enough to be memorable in the grand scheme of things, even if they are quite memorable in the moment.
My impression may sound negative and overly-critical, but I really do have net positive feelings toward this show. I enjoyed watching it each week and feel like it was a show worth my time, even if the events within the show feel kind of pointless.
I'd probably give it a solid C to a high C rating. Maybe not the next genre-defining masterpiece, but an enjoyable and entertaining watch that's almost certainly worth it for most magical girl fans.
I'll give this a shot:
K Project (bestboy)
7. Gold King
10. Little Green Clan kid whose name I forgot.
Hello Lamp. Hello Pants
Quick Love Live Sunshine ranking!
Scorching Ping Pong Girls
Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume
Wooden Spoon: They're all winners. This cast is absolutely stellar.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
