Am I the only one bothered by the fact that it is zoomed in like that? No reason to change the aspect ratio...

Well, reading through the other responses it's clear you are not the only one, and it's the first thing I noticed too. I never care that much about HD, and certainly don't prefer it if it means edges get cut off. |

daviesdao wrote: How did crunchyroll remaster one piece in HD for the older episodes when the old episodes were never broadcasted in HD and there is no bly ray HD release for the older one piece episodes ? Crunchyroll didn't, Toei did. The quick and cheap method of creating a 16:9 broadcast would be to simply upscale and crop, which based on what little I've seen, may be exactly what Toei is doing. A better step would be to rescan the original elements (assuming they were on film), and then carefully select the image to be presented for each scene (pan and scan). The best method would be the second step plus going to the trouble of re-animating sequences that simply don't work well when cropped in any manner. I seriously doubt Toei is doing that. |
Yes, that's my real age

The lines and coloring aren't as fuzzy and eyestraining. The anime started in 1999 so I'm glad that Toei animation took the time to update the episodes to fit the industry standards of today. I think it's a great service to Oda's work. We have both the original and remastered versions on crunchyroll. It's 100% possible to have something in 1080p while keeping it 4:3, Star Trek did, Twin Peaks did, Yu Yu Hakusho and Ranma did. All the examples you listed were done on film. It's 100% possible to rescan film reels with modern equipment and have them come out in 1080p. But, prior to episode 207, One Piece was done DIGITALLY in standard definition, meaning that the SD product that's been available for over a decade is as good as it ever looked. For the majority of TV animation that was produced between 1999-2005 (and even a bit before and a bit after), it's impossible to make them truly 1080p because it was not produced in a format that allows for high definition. The best you can do is upscale, but even that's just a negligible difference. So no, the first 206 episodes of One Piece will never be in HD no matter what snake oil they try to sell you. |

I guess this is okay for people who want to see 2/3rds of a show, but I don't understand the appeal. Seems like a big waste of resources.

But before that I would like Naruto to get the Kai or Brotherhood treatment. I'm a pretty big fan of Naruto (if I want to cosplay it, I consider myself a fan) and am currently re-watching all of Shippuden; let's just say, when you re-watch, it's easy to find those big flaws you didn't notice before. |

Sigh. I see they made it 16:9 by cropping the bottom and top off the image and zooming in, so all the camera work in the original is ruined and characters' heads and feet are cut off... Does Crunchyroll still have the originals as an option? The standard def clearly looks better! Resolution isn't everything...
