There is that, but I was stressing out as soon as the camera panned over Apollo's familia in the bar. I think it's because I was raised to believe in a world where people and communities as a whole resist evil, so when something abusive happens that manipulates social pressures against that instead of for it I don't know how to handle it. It's like seeing someone tying a person's hands behind their back and beating them, while people walk by going "nothing to see here."

It's psychologically a highly accurate portrayal of how people really do behave, and I realize the world I was taught to believe in as a child really doesn't exist. But I still get stressed when a story presents a scenario I don't know how to handle myself. I grew up thinking society had resources for the abused to help enforce basic moral principles, but that requires a society where those principles are of the highest value to the populace, and that society never exists.

More broadly I have issues when someone's personal agency about themselves or their body is violated and the help that they should have isn't forthcoming. So stuff like this kind of triggers a sort of existential crisis about the universe. XD

It just so happens that often those types of scenarios are also sexual, but just not necessarily.

The OP for BEM got my hopes up but the episode seemed pretty average. Cop Craft probably edges it out.

I guess a better way for me to put what I want to say is, there are widely two types of stories in the adventure harem genre.

One is where the main character becomes the center of the universe, and the other is where the main character is one of many players in a game presented by the universe.

I can’t stand the former style of storytelling. It doesn’t have to be good wish fulfillment things exclusively, it can also refer to misfortune. But much like a preteen drama queen, the world has to revolve around the main character. Great things happen to her because she’s destined for them, misfortune befalls her because she’s just too special for the world.

Shows that fall in the latter category would be Rokka no Yuusha, No Game No Life, and many shonen like Hunter x Hunter and Fullmetal Alchemist. In these, the protagonists are constantly tasked to make the world recognize them. Recognition is never handed out, nor is it permanent, they are expected to keep fighting and keep winning, and if they don’t they fade into obscurity because the world has its own agenda and will move along without them. I find so much more immersion in this style, and so much more worth in the glory that is gained. The reason being because the story very clearly portrays that the glory isn’t guaranteed.

In the other style, the glory to me is like video game achievements, there to pat you on the back for succeeding at something you really couldn’t have failed at.

But see, that's the thing: Bell isn't the center of the universe, as easily seen by Sword Oratoria. OG Danmachi just follows Bell's story, so it's of course going to center around him and the people around him. Without Bell, there is no Danmachi. There'd still be a fantasy series, but it wouldn't be the same thing. Plus, Bell's destined for nothing. He is nobody special, aside from the last member of Zeus' familia. It's being that last member that Zeus somehow snuck Realis Freese into Bell, and if not for Bell being frustrated with himself over his ineptitude, he would never have even activated Realis Freese. Yes, he was given a cheat power, but at the same time, it's not something like SAO with Kirito for no reason having dual-wield that makes him constantly overpowered. Bell's skill activated by chance after Zeus planted the seed, and it only works when Bell is properly motivated.

There's no prophecy among the gods about Bell, there's no expectation that he's the one to save the world or anything. Heck, even Zeus expected nothing out of him even though he gave him Realis Freese, and that's why he has Hermes check on him, and Hermes is shocked and laughs about how "this kid you didn't expect anything from may be the one to write a whole new story". Your thing about recognition also rings true with Bell, too. He earns every bit of recognition he gets in that series, and he keeps on moving forward. If he just stopped and rested on his laurels, the gods would lose interest in him.

I know there's more content in the novels that expands on all this, but I still feel like the first season was able to convey that much well at least, and this season and whenever we get the Xenos arc will only further cement that Bell is a character with amazing development and who works his butt off to get what he's got. The only things he's been handed in his life are Realis Freese and the Hestia Knife, everything else he works his butt off to either be given or achieve. Now just to hope J.C. Staff doesn't muck this all up in the conveyance.

I swear Megumin is the best.

If they make the movie properly, we are all in for a real treat. Although Kazuma does go a little too creepy for tastes. Even so, Megumin is just awesome.

One thing I do find funny that they didn’t include in the anime is an episode where Kazuma joins another group temporarily. It’s funny because it shows that Kazuma is actually not that bad at being a fighter. Funny enough even though Kazuma is technically just an adventurer, with his collection of skills, I’d actually classify him as a Ranger. Ranger in most MMOs is like B class warrior B class thief A class archer with added tracking, trapping, and stealth skills. That is basically what Kazuma has shown he does, with the addition of his single drain touch magic spell.

New warlock is into Wrath so I might actually finish this one.

Kind of feels like a caster style I might actually like at endgame as well. Not sure until I get it there though.

Edit:

Apparently there's a bug that makes many types of Cataclysm and Pandaria gathering nodes only give 8% of normal experience. Fun. And it's been like this since late 2018 without any mentions from Blizzard. Guess I'll just trudge on.

Dying in a fire is an absolutely horrible way to die and I completely understand that they don't want to rebuild the building (you really can't expect anyone to go back to work there after all that).

----------------

I watched a few more summer anime yesterday. Dr. Stone and Fire Force were good (as expected) and the first anime this season I'll finish for sure. I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of Dumbbell because I'm not in the mood to watch somebody else work out right now (I might give it another try when I don't have to work out for at least 1.5h a day just to keep my current weight ).
I skipped the daughter anime. I already had a bad feeling about it and reading certain spoilers confirmed my suspicion.
The biggest surprise so far has been Demon Lord, Retry. I'm not sure how enjoyable the subbed version is but the dub is pretty funny. Something about the voice acting and how nothing makes sense, plus the low quality animation and production in general makes it almost look like a parody. It's trash, but it's not even trying to be good which gives it a very enjoyable b-movie atmosphere imo. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the goal, which means it can go downhill and become something that's just bad at any moment but until that happens I'll keep on watching it.
Wasteful Days of High School Girls wasn't bad either. It was a little bit boring at first but that one, long joke in the second half convinced me to give it another try.
