Is there anything good on?

Die Neue These is over again, and while it was welcome it wasn't all that surprising. I'm liking Blade of the Immortal, but that's one show.

And if what I'm left with is Madoka: The Rise of Fanpandering, this might be the first time in my life I've felt that the appropriate response—down to the spelling—is eugh.

Early to tell, but Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! is pleasantly Yuasa.

I have very little idea what to expect from this season until we're a few weeks in, I do like Magia Record though so I'll be following it at least. The rest is just a wide open field of "maybes" and "I hope the Runway de Waratte anime is good..."

I was super impressed by the manga but I'm not sure how it might weather a medium transition.

I think the New Mutants trailer is looking really good.

Edit:

I don't know if I'm going to watch Seton Academy or if it'll just nudge me over the edge of trying Acchi Kocchi and GJ-bu.

Edit:

Prisma Phantasm was really underwhelming for a movie. It was just an hour of stitched comedy shorts and jokes.

Watched through Fate Zero and UBW.

Have to say, didn’t quite like UBW as much as I thought I would, Zero was definitely better. I think it’s primarily that I thought Rin was quite bland and Archer was more of an emo dick than I remember. Best things about UBW were Lancer and Saber. Saber was cute, but Lancer was a true badass.

In Zero, I loved nearly all the characters to different degrees. My favorite without a doubt is Rider, but Lancer and Caster were not far behind. Caster makes me feel like a bad person for liking a villain that is a psychopath child murderer, but he was just having so much fun doing everything it’s hard to hate him. Both him and his master were just enjoying being villains so much.

I’m going to wait for all of Heavens Feel to come out before I watch it, but hopefully it’s more fun than UBW. Until then, I’ll watch the other shows starting with Illya.

Gratz! I definitely think Heaven's Feel has been the best of the lot, but it really builds on having seen FZ and UBW.

UBW is worth it for Heaven's Feel and also all the Rin faces and production value, but I wish they'd kept in more of Shirou's deconstruction as a protagonist. From readers' comments it seems they really glossed over what should've been a very deep dive into how screwed up he was. Maybe because it's movies instead of TV, but Heaven's Feel has been much less circumspect in its darkness. I've been avoiding spoilers so I have no idea what the third movie holds.

I'd actually somehow avoided major spoilers for UBW as well which made it a bit more enjoyable.

Lancer in FZ got a mixed reception but I loved him. His final scene was one of the most memorable to me.

Maybe I would have liked it better if they did that then. Because while I initially liked Shirou, I thought his whole obsession with being a hero got annoying as the show went on. I’m honestly a big believer in Iskander’s philosophy of helping others help themselves by living your life to the fullest. So Shirou’s whole ideal of sacrificing himself to help everyone doesn’t resonate with me.

I felt like close to zero romantic tension between Shiro and Rin so all the Rin scenes did nothing for me. It felt forced. Maybe Sakura will be more convincing.

Edit: Fate Zero’s Lancer was a deep character and I loved him for it. His character was built on regret that he betrayed Fionn or whatever his name was and he wanted to atone for it. All he ever wanted to do was fight fair and be loyal and yet his masters never really allowed him to do that. So his final moment was ( no pun intended) heart rending for him. They took away his chance at atonement and disgraced him even further.

God bless the Urobutcher. His cursing Saber with his dying breath was the chef's kiss.

Same, to my understanding that was the whole point of UBW, all his hero striving comes from the fact that he's a deeply shattered human being and it's the UBW arc that allows him to heal. So Fate/Stay Night is the hero fantasy, Unlimited Blade Works is introspection, coming to terms with the self, and Heaven's Feel is the first time you can look out with unclouded eyes and truly help someone else, which you can't if you are still preoccupied with your own self first and foremost.

Obviously the Shirou in Heaven's Feel isn't the one who went through UBW directly, but it's a powerful sequence for the audience to go through from FSN>UBW>HF. To be infatuated with the self, then reveal and resolve the self's hidden darkness, and only then to be able to look out and see the terrors afflicting Sakura for the first time, despite her being in Shirou's life the entire time. That at least seems to be the narrative progression, having not read the VN personally.

It's such a clever thing to do with the whole overlapping timelines thing though, it makes me really respect Nasu a lot.

I'll check that out; thanks.

I guess I'll also look at Magia Record... I really can't see how adding anything else to that universe won't end poorly. Rebellion was a nice extra considered by itself, but it also kinda contradicted the entirety of the prior work (which is why I consider it by itself). It was already primarily fanpandery. The original anime was art that needed to exist; Magia Record almost certainly exists primarily to make money.

I hold a sort of opposing view to Rebellion being contradictory, but I've definitely heard it put that way.

For Magia Record since it's a side story (kind of like a series about some of the lesser-known X-Men) I went in just really hoping it would be a good anime, and while it is early to tell overall, they dove surprisingly quickly into the meat of the new characters. I was positively dreading an average monster witch-of-the-week franchise with cute girls to entertain fans but already the story being presented is enough to make me sit up and engage to an unusual degree.

That might just be my narrative preferences, but at least they're showing that they aren't messing around.

It's very much in line with what I hope to get from any anime I start and so far I'm very happy. That's from one episode though, and there are 25 more to go so we'll see how it goes. I think it's a split cour to handle the production pressure.

But with intent writing there are endless stories you can tell with this universe so now I'm looking forward to it.

Leakers are saying 25, but then on the same day ANN reported that the BD is listed with only 13 episodes this season. Split cour does seem likely to me since that's what usually happens when there is conflicting news about episode counts like this. Shaft also hasn't been working on any other new series for over a year since they've lost a lot of staff. If this is 25 episodes, splitting it would be the safest move.

First episode was pretty good. I doubt it'll be as good as the original series, but so far it looks like something worth watching for anyone who's a fan of the old series.

Somali is the only other new series I've started this season and it's good too. Really like the art and the world. Nothing too special about the story, but I'm liking the relationship between the two main characters.

And they've also got Assault Lily to handle (of all things) so I hope they take it steady.

And if the anime doesn't quite land for anyone who is otherwise interested in its potential I'd recommend the manga, it's wonderfully atmospheric in that hand-drawn sort of way. It has a very Mushishi-like feeling to nature in it I thought.

It must be really challenging to adapt something where the manga art is too delicate to be translated directly to animation when the art plays such a major role in the story's atmosphere that has to somehow be recreated independently.

Hm... tomorrow is shieldsekai, rugby, dragon hunters, and Plunderer. Half-curious about that last one.

Then a bunch of shows drop on Thursday, wow. Like... eight I think.

Edit:

Yikes.

Edit:

Caught up on everything I wanted to try I think, tomorrow looks pretty busy too though. New seasons are fun.
