an excerpt from my blog...

Akagami no Shirayuki - 9.1/10 - This show had everything going for it in the pre-season hype, a twist on a familiar concept, a suite of awesome voice actresses and a great production studio. Fortunately, all of these things came together splendidly producing what I would consider the best of this season's offerings. The soundtrack was beautifully crafted in a manner that always accented the mood without ever commanding it. There's never a more awkward feeling than when the music tells you you should feel something that you just aren't. The soundtrack was also wonderfully varied, and while there wasn't any particular standout track the music on the whole was always a pleasant addition. The one qualm I had about this series were the character designs, as I've pointed out many times. If you've seen any of my manga post, the characters are much leaner with sharper and more refined features lending themselves to a more mature look. In the anime they rounded out a lot of Zen and Shirayuki's features, making them appear younger. A decision that while I don't agree with, in the end didn't detract from the series as much as I thought it would at the start. Being a romance the series didn't always demand the highest quality of animation, but Bones delivered very clean animation for the scenes that required it, in addition to the often jaw-droppingly gorgeous art. The number of screens I got from the series of landscapes alone should speak to the beauty of the show.

Enough about the series' aesthetics though, the real heart of the series lies with its characters. To say Shirayuki is a "strong female character" is almost selling her short. Despite being a romance, the series focuses on developing the cast so they have desires and motivations beyond their relationship. The characters are able to balance a series of long and short term goals for a variety of reasons. Shirayuki wants to continue to practice and learn medicine because she enjoys learning, she likes being independent, she likes helping people, and the icing on the cake, she can help support Zen. That blend of multiple motivations and desires is key, in allowing the romance to evolve without resulting in bland one dimensional characters. The other thing that I would like to call attention to is that the nature of most of the relationships in this show is support. The cast weaves a support network that is very reminiscent of how natural relationships evolve. The story adaptation speaks to this evolutionary nature, in that it is able to mold the typical "boy meets girl > girl likes boy > fall in love" progression into something that neither party actively pursues but they rather stumble into naturally. I will say that they did cut and rearrange things, like pulling in Zen's past, but I think the series did well enough for it. Hmm perhaps I should've just written a review for the series on it's own. Oh well.

Non Non Biyori Repeat - 7.9/10 - If you've seen the first season then you know exactly what to expect. In that regard the season is perfect in that it conveys all the sentiment from the first season with just more. And who wouldn't want more of these cute country girls doing nothing. Could definitely do with some more relaxing anime series in my life. That being said this is by no means a substantial series, but rather like drinking iced tea on a hot summer day.

I'll keep it brief.

I vote for Snow White with the Red Hair because it was a charming show with meaningful relationships and believable characters.

Snow White with the Red Hair A beautiful fairy tale like story that is lead by a strong female and strong supporting characters that create a nice chemistry with one another. Powerful romance and story that gives off a nice fantasy feel. Also Shirayuki deserves to join the ranks of Rin Tohsaka as the only person to come out of a RotF and win the tourney. Non Non Biyori will choke in the finals again. (I do like Non Non Biyori though don't get me wrong)

This is a nyanpasu vote!

Non Non Biyori Repeat

Non Non Biyori Repeat was really fun to watch. I don't normally watch moe slice of life anime but this one is really cute. I was never bored when i watched and I looked forward to it when new episodes came out. It also has really nice animation. Some of the scenes were really beautiful. All of the characters have great personalities too. They were truly a joy to watch. Even Nii-chan and he doesn't even talk. This anime was really relaxing and some of the things they did reminded me of my little sister.

Moments like these.

Akagami no Shirayuki was ok. It was really slow and sometimes I was bored. I didn't really find Zen or Shirayuki interesting. I liked Obi though. I also still can't believe it beat Haikyuu and Jojo.

Non Non Biyori - NNBR gets my vote because it is funny, calming, and emotional all in one package of nostalgic childhood magic. Episode 4 was hands down my favorite episode out of any anime last year. Real tears were shed. Real tears were shed.

Snow White with the Red Hair - Both have pretty easy going cast and both are definitely not 2015's best but I enjoyed Shirayuki's cast more and the romance.

A 2015 Red Champion Vote

Snow White with the Red Hair

Well, she already has the clothes to rule over us all.

As much as I love Non Non Biyori, if it;s a choice between that and Akagami no Shirayuki, it would easily be the latter. As fun and entertaining as NNB is, Shirayuki is just a much more powerful anime, in my eyes. It is lighthearted a lot of the time, but when things get heavy and tense, it's handled just as well, and is just as enjoyable as the lighter moments.

I would also honestly say Shirayuki is up there with some of the best female shoujo protagonists. She isn't instantly loved and accepted by everyone, but tries her best, nonetheless, and her persevering nature transfers to other times of hardship, too. She stands on her own as a distinct character, and isn't defined solely by her devotion to her love interest. She's independent enough to make her own smart decisions, while many other female protagonists in the genre would fail spectacularly at the slightest hint a difficult situation. Basically, she's not a boring and plain Mary Sue. Of course, it's not all about Shirayuki. The anime is made up of a cast of strong and/or entertaining characters, a couple of the most notable being Zen and Obi.

The pacing may feel a little slow, but I think that works perfectly. It doesn't rush the story, and it makes it appear more believable. It makes moments of tension and drama more impactful, than if we were to get them every episode. The romance is told in a way that isn't eye-rollingly cliche. Whilst Shirayuki's red hair may be an intriguing characteristic to some of the other characters, it isn't essentially an instant love spell. Shirayuki and Zen build up their relationship over the course of the anime, which makes their relationship appear so much more genuine than a lot of romances out there. It makes for good storytelling and good romance, which is based on more than love at first sight.

I've said this time and time again, but this easily the best shoujo/romance of 2015. So, regardless of whether or not people consider it the overall best of 2015, it's still a very worthy winner.

Non Non Biyori Repeat - It's a tough choice as I enjoyed both shows. However, I finished one show and not the other, so I'm going with NNB. The show is therapy in animation form, it is just so soothing.

Snow White with the Red Hair - Great romance featuring a wonderful female lead. Fairy tale endings do happen, doesn't Shirayuki deserve it? I think so!

It's certainly got the upper hand, but it's too soon to say that.
