SAO, I assume?

It's very much a popular opinion, if two seasons, multiple games, and upcoming movie is anything to go by. I don't follow sales, but I imagine they're pretty damn good, too.

Typo, but yeah, SAO

I just see people shit on it so much. I think snobs like to spit on anything mainstream.

SAO is average. Does that count as an opinion about SAO that isn't popular? Usually it's either "this is amazing" or "this sucks."

Brotherhood follows the manga while the 2003 FMA does not. You prefer a filler to the original?

I think there's a subtle but important difference between filler and an anime-only ending. The first, by design, occurs between canon arcs which it cannot conflict with so it is extremely limited both in what it can do and the impact it can have, since it's something that essentially didn't happen and will have no continuity with the rest of the story. But it's different when a story either runs out of, or intentionally departs from, the original to make an anime-only continuity.

Obviously the list of times this has been done successfully enough to win fans is very tiny I'd imagine, but I know Kekkai Sensen did it very successfully and if FMA 2003 also lands on that list for a number of people more power to it imo.

Okay then.

This. It gets hate because it's so ridiculously popular.

...... and because, if you haven't seen it (especially when it first came out), it looks from the outside like it could be something a lot better than it is, especially if you remember .hack//SIGN (which is like SAO but all intellectual and stuff. And made 10 years before SAO. It's really good, though. Same music composer, too.)

So yeah, SAO is awful if you're expecting .hack//SIGN. But if you're expecting an average, somewhat-harem, otaku action anime, SAO is average. But a lot of people were expecting something more like .hack//SIGN when SAO started (myself included) so...

I'm not a huge fan of 90s anime. With most shows I can't seem to look past the art style (Cowboy Bebop and the first seasons of One Piece were exceptions though).

I recommend Big O and Outlaw Star. Both are equally good.

Sword Art Online is much deeper than most people think. It's a philosophical exploration of what happens as we move more & more into integrating technology into every aspect of our lives. If anything, Sword Art Online could be a spiritual successor to Wargames, & that movie is considered a seminal shift in popular culture in regards to technology & military force.
