Crunchyroll has reduced bitrate by 40-70%, damaging video quality to save money

How old was the source material? i've seen a few shows lately like Gasaraki that probably don't justify a supremely high bitrate. I remember seeing that one back in 2000 before I graduated when streaming sites werent born yet and edonkey was new.

On the other hand, ones like Umi Monogatari are much more recent, and should look far better but are a complete joke. There were better TV rips when it was new.

I saw some noticeable block artifacts in shaded areas when watching the new Ancient Magus bride, especially one faces.
I thought Monster Girls and Tanya looked more or less the same.

Really disappointed with the new bitrate, even a blind man can tell how subpar the video quality is now. I don't want to unsub but it may end up happening.

it was the latest episode of Rewrite (episode 22 to be exact, that is, season 2, episode 9). the overall bitrate was 594 kb/s when the usual is around 1900 kb/s at 720p. not that it matters, since it was fixed already.

There's something else going on here that probably merits its own thread. I think Crunchyroll swaps out episodes for lower-quality ones after a week, and what happened here was them premiering the lower-quality episode immediately rather than waiting a week to swap it out. I just checked several older episodes and noticed the same low bitrate that people are (rightfully) up in arms about here. What I suspect happened is that Crunchyroll accidentally (or on purpose) skipped the high quality encode that they normally use for a week and just went to the lower-quality "archive" encode that they swap to after the first week.

I'd rather wait to see what CR has to say about this before jumping the gun, but they really do need to respond to this.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing. It could be an honest mistake but we'll see

did you guys (premium members) try contacting support?
they should respond much faster that way (reminder that the mods here are only in charge of moderating the forum and have no control over how CR operates)

I agree with this. That we should send letters first and get an official response before any boycott of sorts

Do you have any proof that they older episodes are swapped for lower quality encodes?

Adding to a burning oil fire with no proof isn't helping the situation. It's how news gets out of hand these days with sub-topic allegations starting from a main branch with no proof backing.

I have premium and contacted support. The ticket was escalated an hour ago as it is being looked into.
I expressed concern about the bitrate issue and also informed of the "accusation" from the subreddit.

I will keep you guys posted of any updates. I personally have not been able to replicate the problem since it may have been fixed however I've noticed some "pixel" issue with ACCA's latest episode. Whether it is due to bitrate or just me paying more attention, I'm not sure yet.

I have partial proof that I should be able to upgrade to full proof in the near future. Episode 10 of Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga is 477mb with an average video bitrate of 2627 kb/s. Episode 9 is 360mb with an average video bitrate of 1948 kb/s. Episode 3 is 311mb with an average video bitrate of 1647kb/s. And no, I am not comparing rips that other people have made - these are the very files that CR streams out.

I will be keeping an eye on this and a couple of other shows to see if the bitrate and file size change in the future when I download them again.

This is not quite as big a dropoff as what happened to Rewrite, but I do think it is noticeable - and a real shame if my suspicions prove true, because then I would be better off downloading rips that people have made right when new episodes have been released than using Crunchyroll.

Edit your message and remove the "$" from within the image tags. This is a known current bug.

Oh wow, those comparisons really hurt my eyes.

I guess it's really hard to notice, but that doesn't make it okay.

So glad we can count on Daiz to totally shit on CR when it's due.

I'm okay with more updated low bitrate encodes, but you don't just go back to older ones. You also don't use the fast preset. Does CR use fast for new releases and then switch to a regular encode? That would make sense. However, someone said that the archive encodes are lower quality than new ones... SMH.
