4 Mob Psycho 100
1 She and Her Cat -Everything Flows-

Mob Psycho 100 surprised me. One Punch Man didn't really catch my attention, so I didn't expect to like Mob Psycho. But I ended up enjoying it immensely. The characters were multi-faceted and amusing. I especially liked how Reigen's character was handled. What appeared to be just a run of the mill conman ended up being a much more interesting and wise character than one would guess from the first episode.

3 The Heroic Legend of Arslan -Dust Storm Dance-

BBK was a mech show running on rule of cool. It has some of the best cgi I've seen in anime. The studio managed to get fluid motion and, more importantly, did a good job on the facial expressions. I particularly liked Reoko and gang. They were an interesting take on enemy-mentors.

4 Thunderbolt Fantasy

Thunderbolt Fantasy is an entertaining sword and sorcery tale with interesting characters. I have enough fondness for puppets, whether that be movies like The Dark Crystal or shows like Farscape, that puppets aren't a negative for me. It's amazing how fast the show can make you care about some of the characters. The character interactions are also extremely amusing at times. Shang was so done with all of them.

Group Stage #2 Vote

Group 5 wow this is a really tough group

(4) Mob Psycho 100- Originally, I wasn't a fan of this show. The first episode almost completely turned me off, and the second and third weren't that much better. Luckily, I kept watching though, and I was not disappointed. This show grew on me by the end so much that it became one of my favorites of the year and showed me one of my favorite characters of all time in Reigen. Bones is my favorite studio, and I love the amazing job they did adapting this series. As for the source material, Mob Psycho is (in my opinion) far better than the ever popular One Punch Man, ONE's other work. This one is actually a great story with great characters while still keeping the same funky kind of charm both the series have.

(3) Flying Witch- Like Mob Psycho, I was not a fan of this show after watching the first episode. Unlike Mob Psycho, I dropped it right then and there. This tournament though, along with praise from other people, led me to giving the show another chance, and I loved it. Maybe I had a new perspective after watching more SoL shows this year or something, but I thought Flying Witch was amazing this time around. I love the characters, the comedy, the chill atmosphere, the familial themes, the catchy OP, and pretty much everything else too. I'm definitely glad I got myself to give this show a second try.

(2) She and Her Cat -Everything Flows-- If this group wasn't so stacked, this beautiful little short series would never have been in 3rd. Makoto Shinkai is probably my favorite director, and even though he wasn't really involved with this that much, it still definitely had a Shinkai kind of feel to it. It was quite the half-hour ride, and I loved every minute of it. And that cat. That wonderful cat.

(1) Ninja Girl & Samurai Master- Ok, I honestly think I have some sort of prejudice with short shows, because no matter how good they are, I never put them higher than the longer ones. I feel really bad putting in in last place, because I enjoyed this show a lot. It was actually legitimately good and really funny, but idk I just can't put it above the other stuff. Still, I would really recommend people watch this, and it's barely any time commitment.

Group 6

(4) My Hero Academia- And here it is. My absolute favorite show of the year. Call me basic or whatever. Call the first season not even that good. I don't care. I absolutely loved this show from the very first episode, and it was amazing the whole way through. Honestly, it's probably going to be my favorite of 2017 too, but that's not important right now. This series brought raw emotions out of my that hardly any other series has been able to do before. It's another Bones show (thank GOODNESS Pierrot didn't pick this one up), and they did an amazing job yet again. Yuki Hayashi (Haikyuu) created another amazing soundtrack, and even now, I get chills whenever I hear "You Can Become a Hero." The animation was typical Bones quality, that is to say, outstanding. The show got me pumped up so much, especially in the All Might vs. Noumo fight. The cast is one of my favorites to come out of any anime ever. They are all so fun and unique and actually well written too. They may not seem like they have much depth at first, and with this many characters, some weren't able to get much screen time in the first season. They all get their time later on to develop, but that doesn't really have anything to do with the first season of the anime I guess. The fights are smart. This is one of my favorite parts of the show. Deku succeeds through his wits. Even Bakugou, the seemingly typical in-your-face fired-up arrogant bastard is a top student and can use smarts in a fight, though sometimes he lets his feelings get the better of him. Honestly, I could keep talking about this for days, but I just realized how long this paragraph is getting, so I'll stop here.

(3) The Heroic Legend of Arslan -Dust Storm Dance-- Ok, this is another one of my iffy votes. I've only seen the first ten episodes of the first season and none of this one, so I probably shouldn't put it above Keijo, which I actually completed. I'm doing it anyways though. From what I've seen of Arslan, I love it. Honestly it's just pretty damn good.

(2) Keijo- I wasn't expecting much out of this series, and I didn't get much. What is did get was some really hilarious moments, and I did appreciate a lot of the parodying it tried to do. However, that's about it. I might have a bit of a bias against this since it's a Xebec show, idk. It just wasn't that enjoyable. I watched for the ridiculous moments, but I never really thought "Wow, this is good."

(1) BBK/BRNK- I didn't watch this. It's not because of the CG. I don't really mind, at least when it isn't terrible, and I don't think this show's was. I loved Ajin for instance. However, I just never really heard any good things about this show, and I didn't think watching it was all of a sudden going to give me another show I wanted to vote for. If I hadn't watched some of these shows just recently, I might have regretted it because I really liked some of them and want them to get far in the tourney. I don't think this would be one of those.

Group 7

(4) Tanaka-kun is Always Listless- After KonoSuba ended in Winter, I was a little worried any other comedies wouldn't really be able to pick up the slack in the spring season. Thankfully, I was wrong. Tanaka-kun came in with a very different style of comedy which I enjoyed just as much, if not more, than KonoSuba's. Actually, I'll just say it. I did enjoy it more. I really, really liked the kind of slow-paced comedy that Tanaka-kun had. Rather than be wacky and all over the place, it used silences and chill moments to just be really frickin funny. I don't know, I can't really explain it that well. Let's just say I really liked Sakamoto, but the titan of the spring season, at least for comedy, was definitely Tanaka-kun is Always Listless.

(3) Thunderbolt Fantasy- So, originally I was put off by the dolls, like many others I'm sure. I decided to watch it for this tournament, and I haven't gotten that far, but it's pretty good. The direction in the fight scenes is cool, though it can be very confusing. The soundtrack is absolutely stellar. I'm pretty sure the people that advocate the greatness of it mostly do so because of how little people actually watched it, similar to Rakugo, but to an even greater extent. But, yeah, it's decent.

(2) Yuri on Ice- I think the anti-hype got to me a little on this one. I honestly enjoyed the show a lot. I thought the ice skating was pretty fun and cool, and a bunch of the songs were pretty nice (JJ's theme is fire). Did I think it was even close to the best show of 2016? Not in the slightest. I didn't really care about the whole homosexual relationship thing, I just watched it for the sport. I didn't really find any of it funny, so that contributed to some of my dislike I guess. JJ is the best part of the show. The OP wasn't that good. The animation wasn't that good (not all the way through anyways). Some of the characters looked reaaallly weird on the ice, especially Yurio. He was so skinny it was honestly scary. And that's about all my thoughts on the show.

(1) Koyomimonogatari- Didn't watch it. I've only seen a little bit of Bakemonogatari, and I don't really care about the series. Shaft is second only to Bones as a studio for me, so I do want to get into the series, but I've got some other stuff to finish.

Group 8

(4) Re:Zero- I loved this show. I'm not afraid to admit it. Okay, I'm a little afraid. Honestly, the anti-hype got to me a little bit here as well, not while it was airing though, so that's probably why it's still on top. I almost feel bad for liking this show, but when I think about it, I actually really can't find much that was all too bad about it. I mean, ok. I hated Episodes 13-17. I absolutely loved the first 12 episodes, I think that was by far the best part of the series (not sure if too many people agree with me on that). After that though, I just stopped enjoying it for a while, until it got into the whale arc, and even then it wasn't as good as it was before. Crusch pretty much saved that arc for me though. Crusch is best girl. Fight me. But yeah, in all seriousness, it was a great show. I think it deserved most of the hype it got, no matter how much my mind sometimes tells me otherwise.

(3) Gate S2- This is another show I've only seen part of the first season to. I like it though. It's not amazing. It's pretty fun watching military technology go up against fantasy creatures though. I should finish this soon.

(2) Love Live Sunshine- Haven't seen this one. I liked School Idol Project quite a bit though, a lot more than I thought I would. This is another one I need to get around to eventually, but who knows when that will be.

(1) Girlish Number- I did see most of this show while it was airing, but man it was boring. I just couldn't get myself to watch the last couple of episodes, and I'm still finding it hard to get myself to finish it for this tournament. Like, my goodness it is just sooo damn boring. I really don't have much else to say about it. It's not bad. It's got kind of that forced drama feel to it that I don't really like in some parts. But man. Mostly it just boils down to what I said before. It's BORING.

She and Her Cat -Everything Flows- (4) - Not often do audiences see through a pet's perspective. Seeing the cat and his struggling owner's life hit close to home.

Ninja Girl & Samurai Master (3) - Because... the castle presented itself? Chidori's prowess and maturity are at odds with each other. Nonetheless, she's got good people around her to keep her relatively straight. Besides charming characters, this show does a great job at packing a lot of humor in 3-4 minute bursts.

Flying Witch (2) - Tranquility in anime form. I would love to go whale watching with Makoto and Chinatsu, or chill at Anzu's cafe.

Mob Psycho 100 (1) - Dynamic animation style galore.

Group 6

My Hero Academia (4) - You can become a Hero.

Keijo (3) - Hiten Mitsurugi-Ryu Vacuum Butt Cannon!

BBK/BRNK (2)

The Heroic Legend of Arslan -Dust Storm Dance (1)

Group 7

Koyomimonogatari (4) - What’s the easiest thing to find? Monogatari: Slice of life edition; plus unexpected insights.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless (3) - Deceptively-pleasant atmosphere and visuals. I love how the series starts off as incredibly dry. The school was like a canvas, and the first color introduced was Tanaka (black/grey). The school progressively got more colorful as his friends were introduced.

Thunderbolt Fantasy (2) - Anime or not, it was enjoyable nonetheless. The puppetry, camera work, and music were particularly fantastic.

Yuri on Ice (1) - Best Boy Yurio

Group 8

Re:Zero (4) - It was rough...

Love Live Sunshine (3) - I am not Zura.

Girlish Number (2) - It took a bit of time, but the characters grew on me. Wished Koto had more screen time.

[Group 5]

Flying Witch [4] - I hadn't felt this chilled and relaxed while also constantly smiling at an anime in a long time. It really felt like a welcome sight after a long day at work.

Ninja Girl & Samurai Master [3] - cute and quirky with comedy and action, but admittedly I haven't finished it.

Mob Psycho 100[2] - Better than I expected or initially let on. Still not a big fan, but I also have not finished it.

She and Her Cat -Everything Flows [1] - Have not watched, but I feel I should some day.

[Group 6]

BBK/ BRNK [4] - Well since it made it in and Gundam is already out, I gotta go full bore. Plus Kinoa and better CG than Berserk

My Hero Academia[3] - Best Super Hero and super powers based anime since Tiger and Bunny.

Keijo [2] - Because it made me laugh. And had some of the sexiest girls in a while, but it never totally grabbed me except for perverse reasons.

The Heroic Legend of Arslan[1] - I typically love shows like this, but just couldn't get into it. Perhaps tastes are changing. Not bad, but just doesn't warrant more points.

[Group 7]

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless [4] - One of the best casts and perfect voices in a long long time. Great humor. Loveable characters. Really good animation. It was also very chill at times, Just like Tanaka. I can't really find any faults in this show.

Koyomimonogatari[3] - Because Monogatari is near perfection. But, Tanaka had me laughing more. Laughs = bonus points.

Thunderbolt Fantasy[2] - If not for the other two above it, it would get more points. Quite enjoyable even if not "anime"

Yuri on Ice [1] - So much derp.

[Group 8]
Re: Zero [4] - Yes I love Rem... Ok. I admit that. But, I also love Crush. Hot girls in armor win out. I also really liked the animation. I look forward to the future with this show. It made me want to watch every week as soon as it came out. That warrants 4 points.

Gate S2 - I know what you're thinking. "WTH Yam didn't rank Gate #1?!" Yes. GATE is in my top 10 fav anime of pretty much ever. Favorite doesn't always mean best or better though. S1 was better than S2 imho. I still hold that overall GATE is one of the strongest anime of the past few years, but overall in this grouping I felt Re:Zero deserved top spot.

Girlish Number[2] - Cute girls and a neat plot, but I just never wholly got into it or finished it. I will fix that some day.

Love Live Sunshine[1] - Have not watched. I am a bad Idol lover. But, Dia will definitely make me watch for her alone someday.

It's incredible how happy this series made me. Didn't expect that at all. And it's closer to real sports than most sports anime usually are which is something I highly appreciate.
Thunderbolt Fantasy-3
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless-2
Dropped it after the first episode.
Koyomimonogatari-1
Didn't watch this one but I watched one episode of Bakemonogatari and it was hell. I have no idea why watching it was so painful for me but that's how it was and I'm pretty sure Koyomimonogatari isn't (significantly) better than Bakemonogatari.

Re:Zero-4
I really enjoyed the mystery-part of it. It could still end up as a huge disappointment because the most important questions weren't answered in the first season but so far it's been a fun ride.
Girlish Number-3
Didn't watch it but I plan to and it looks like it needs the points.
GATE S2-2
I had to ignore a lot during the second season. Maybe a little bit too much...
