------------------------
I didn't realise the number of shows I really liked throughout the year had dropped off like that.
Though some of it is probably due to the unavailability of several shows I was interested in.
I put my season favourites in colour. I think all my favourites had good storylines with a focus on character development along with pleasing graphics and good soundtracks. Also, they mostly had adults (or teens in adult situations) as their main character.
Besides that, I liked the timing and balance on these shows. Shouwa had good pacing in unfolding it's secrets and mysteries; Bungo had some nice Shakespearean timing in switching between action and comedy; 91 days had good build up and Iron Blooded Orphans had good timing switching between action and story development (character/exposition). I hope that makes any sense. I just feel like although the shows I chose were very different, the reasons I chose them are pretty much the same.
Still if I had to pick one overall winner for 2016, I'd pick Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. Because I'd never heard of Rakugo before and because I got invested in this story even though several of the main characters weren't likeable at all. I think it takes some really good storytelling and character building to make the audience care about characters that are as self-centred as most of this bunch appeared to be.
