Why do so many anime girls only have bottom lips?

Noticed this for a while now that so many of the slightly older women in anime only have bottom lips.

Anyone know what is up with that

Easiest to draw consistently, I guess.

Probably just another part of the common artistic direction of current anime.

Top lip is implied. It doesn't create much of a shadow, so there's nothing to draw there.

Saying they don't have one is like saying they don't have nostrils. They're breathing, and the show didn't say they can breathe without them, so they have them.

Also, it's not just girls, it's all characters. Why do you just say girls?

Adding to the topic's question. Why do the female characters in some animes either have a dot for a nose, or no nose at all?

Whenever someone smiles (showing teeth full smile) their upper lip becomes thin and their bottom lip becomes prominent. So as an artistic style, by only showing the lower lip, they try to bring out that pleasantness of a smile.

Smaller noses are cuter, and a dot serves the purpose of representing a small nose. Anime artistic style is usually about emphasizing cuter features in ways that make them cuter. (Big eyes, small nose, bottom lip) Big nose usually = old person, while big bottom and top lip usually = ditsy slut for girl characters and hulking oaf for male characters.

Way to perfectly answer the question and end the thread man, GOOD JOB! (really, no sarcasm, only the irony of a definitive answer putting an end to the tread)

I noticed that too, and it's only older women, so saying it to be cuter does not answer the question otherwise they would do this for ALL female characters not just older ones. I think it implies the character is wearing lipstick ( and perhaps in Japan that is what's fashionable now) Don't most women only apply it to their lower lip and then roll their top lip to get some on it?

As women age, their lips get thinner. This plus the anime stylistic choices means that bottom lip is shown, top lip is implied.

As you get older, circulation quality decreases in the upper part of your body. So while a young woman will have distinctly pink lips, an older woman will have paler lips closer to the colour of her cheeks. This is one of the reasons women wear lipstick: to brighten their lips and appear younger. A teenage girl doesn't need any, but as a woman approaches her mid-twenties there's a noticeable difference, and by her late thirties it's perfectly obvious.

This is one of the many details in anime that people consider superior to Western animation. Meanwhile, Westerners continue to piss and moan about the lip syncing on dubbed anime, because they apparently don't understand what "dubbed" even means.
