With media exposure being what it is, there is no longer any such thing as an innocent twelve year old. I will never understand this desire to revert to some Waltons~style puritanism. It wasn't until a few centuries ago that average life expectancy barely exceeded thirty. Let us not concern ourselves with one (cool) youth's media preferences

Personally i would be more concerned about the 10-14 years old's been exploited as contract killers by street gangs like the ms13 than those same teenagers watching attack on titan.

How much of a gang presence is there in the Great White North? I would have to venture that Canada's relatively restrained attitude towards the things upon which gangs in America traditionally thrive, namely drugs and prostitution, would somewhat limit their ability to be profitable

You would be surprised, there's a criminal underworld which still thrives on those but they are less prone to violence compared to south of the border. There's a few areas where your shirt color can get you in trouble if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, we got a presence from different groups like (Italian mafia, Hell angels, bloods, crips....)

I watched Attack on Titan, because it's popular. But after finishing the first season, I had no desire to watch the second season. The wanton ultra violence & gore just turned me off. I watched Elfen Lied, because it's considered a landmark series. But, after watching it, I had no desire to go back & watch it again. I've also seen Vampire Hunter D, Kite, & Wrath of the Yotoden, so I'm no novice to violent anime. But at a certain point, Gore for gore's sake is just sad & pandering to the lowest common denominator.

I won't judge anyone old enough to watch the series, since I tend to indulge in the more Ecchi side of anime, myself. But, the longer it takes the U.S. to get over it's inherent stereotypes of cartoons being only for kids, the more we will see term & mature themed content in the hands of young minors.

Why would any responsible adult get involved when a child is handling something potentially dangerous for them, either physically, emotionally, or intellectually? Because it's the right thing to do.

Sheesh...

The prevalent view going around these days is that kids of any age oughta be able to do and watch what ever they want and nobody has even a RIGHT to object.

If you're asking for opinions, then mine is certainly that you shouldn't go around trying to police the content other people's children (or other people, rather) consume. Seriously so many more pressing things in life than the fact that some kid is reading shounen manga.

OP, I know you mean well and that's commendable, but it's none of your business. But you bring up a good point if it's appropriate for a 12 year old to watch something like AoT.

The answer is up to the parents and their responsibility to understand if their child is mature enough to handle the content. I hope the parents of the 12 year old at least have an idea of what their child is reading/watching.

At 12 I was watching things worse than AoT. So I don't think it's that bad. My girl is 7 yrs old and the most violent anime she watches is One Piece. Would I let her watch AoT at 12? I don't know.

I can't help but find it highly amusing that a little church goer was reading Tokyo Goul of all things...at church, never mind the fact she's 12 lol.

Whatever manga they're carrying with them I can almost guarantee they've run across much more objectionable material on the Internet.
