NASA is pitching several missions to Neptune and Uranus that could include flybys, atmospheric penetration, and orbiters. NASA has not visited either planet since the mid to late 80s, so they feel the time is ripe to start looking at how and why these planets formed.

NASA can launch a mission to my anus any day Hoo boy they can penetrate my atmosphere whenever they want too.

In all seriousness that's pretty cool though. And I never realized there'd only ever been one mission to both planets.

Unfortunately I did not read the mission study because of the length, but I took a look at the executive summary. I'd be excited to hear what they find out, although I'm not that knowledgeable about extraterrestrial science. There's probably a lot that could be learned that's either relevant to our understanding of earth or our understanding of what's 'out there.' As such it's a little disappointing that this isn't happening for several years - hopefully it doesn't get shelved.

I am not sure how much they can learn about it we don't already know, as the flyby only cover one of my many layers of these planets.

I would be like flying by an onion. You can see the skin, but there is 50 more layers of gas under it.

Which is why one of the proposals was to send a probe deep into that onion like a cocktail skewer through a pearl onion.
