I start this topic as a place where a users can provide some story ideas or arts to help understand the current conflict between liberalism and populism. The conflict can be termed more scientifically as social liberal versus social conservative, respectively.

Here is my story idea of a fictional race:

Neo-Demons that embody Social Liberalism
The setting in the Gabriel Dropout anime is used as reference point. Ecology terms is also used.

The name of their race very by history and community but neo-demon is now the official term of their race. Little is known of their origin. Their cultures vary but they generally have loose social organization. They can change sex in childhood but slowly lose this ability with age; in adulthood, only a few secondary sexual traits are changeable. Interbreeding with other races is common.

R-selection
Single parent, especially single mother, are common in this race. In fact, some sub-population are even capable of asexual reproduction. They tend to provide little care to their offspring but this vary greatly by socio-economic status: on one extreme, the rich two-parent family provide prolonged care to their children until their death; the homeless single mothers on the other extreme, by deception or consent, make some humans raise their children instead. Their lifespan and life stage resemble human.

Generalist ecology
They are historically outcompeted by demons and angels so they are forced into the lives of thieves, con-artists, imposters, and homeless beggars unless they live as humans. The current social change allows them to occupy new respectable jobs by outcompeting the demons and angels who cannot adapt fast enough to the new environment. They are now in intense competition with demons and angels on low-level jobs. Their generalist role has cause them to be adaptive, creative, and innovative. They have low magic potential but their magic ability and appearance can easily be altered from both cultural and environmental influence.

I am trying to find the connection between these genre and political ideologies. From what I gathered, the super robots and magical girl is an old genre that seem to reflect a classical liberal values; gundam and precure are associated with the clasical liberal so they can represent the social conservative side. For political background, the US culture flavor liberalism so the social conservative in US tend not to be liberal in the absolute sense; the social conservative in US are mainly dominated by the classical liberals followed by the Christian conservatives. This should be reflected in Donald Trump's public speech with his liberal mannerism and his conservative position on social issues. The more recent anime may make a deviation to those genre to reflect the social liberal values.

I should provide more information for story ideas. I abstract the conflict on a more fundamental ideology context to come up with some philosophical distinctions: The populists would be groups who have historic prestige or presence but now have marginal status relative to their historic status; the social liberals would be groups who never have lack historic prestige, and may even lack a history, but now have prestige relative to their historic status. In another ideological distinction, the social liberal would oppose social boundary in its many forms (political, economic, social, cultural...) on the claim that it would allow humans to unlease their good potential while the populists would support such social boundary on the claim that it would maintain order and stability. KADO: The Right Answer anime did show a good metaphor of this two ideological conflicts.

Some political ideologies that would be associated with social liberals are: globalism, transnationalism, communism, neo-liberalism, and libertarianism. Some political ideologies that would be associated with the populists are: conservative, religious fundamentalism, facism, nationalism, and classical liberalism (debatable). Environmentalism and vegetarianism may be associated with the social liberals but this depend on the specific nation. Socialism have no independent association with either orientations. The anime communities have a social liberal orientation in general but there are a significant amount of hardcore anime fans who are classical liberals as well.

Ideas to describe a story that mix Kingdom Hearts with 21st populist uprising:

Journal about Donald Trump: "Believing that the balance of the first world is being upset with the overabundance of liberalism, he attempts to fight against the 'tyranny of Liberalism' by starting a trade war to destroy the Liberal order and recreate an order where Liberalism and Conservatism exist in balance."

Journal about Vladimir Putin: "The populist leader of Russia, he has recent controls of the country both directly and indirectly. He attempts to bring Russia back to its religious past and revive the Soviet Union under populist leadership." "He attempts to interfere in the presidential elections of many Western countries which eventually provoke bipartisan retaliation from USA politicians that is so powerful that it overcome Trump's authority as president."
