I just finished the show and I really enjoyed it. unfortunately there isn't a season two but since its based off of a visual novel I thought about picking it up, the thing is I heard the visual novel gets bad after season 1 ended should I just play it or should I treat the graduation episode as the ending?

I just pretend it ended when the anime ended.

Have you seen the virtual novel? Is it as bad as people say?

I have not read them (light novel, not visual novel). For a full explanation (note: massive spoilers included) see here:

https://frogkun.com/2013/08/13/the-ending-of-sakurasou-no-pet-na-kanojo-sucked-light-novel-spoilers/

From the sound of it, the ending is awful if either:

a) You did not realize that the major theme of Pet Girl is that a guy cannot possibly be in a happy, loving relationship with a woman more professionally successful than he is,

and

b) You foolishly insisted on shipping someone outside of the obvious pairings.

If you are okay with both of those things, then read away. Otherwise, take the finale of the anime for what it is, and go read ToraDora.

The whole theme in itself makes no sense if that is the major theme so i can see why people hate the ending

Even in the anime, it comes up repeatedly. Jin rebuffs Misaki because/until he is "worthy" of her; Jin warns Sorata about getting too close to Mashiro because it is so hard be with someone who is more talented than you; Sorata comes to resent Mashiro's talent and success, etc.

Pet Girl is a fun romance anime, and ought to have been right up my alley, but that theme was just a major turn-off for me.
