I just discovered there is a convention for Yaoi and Bara. I just adore Boy's Love!! Has anyone been? What did you think? What all can you buy there? Is the merch itself worth going for? Please share! Squee!

Some parts of anime community can be pretty fucked up.

This is just an outcast convention

I've wanted to go for 5+ years but be it money or not being able to get the time off it hasn't been possible and this year is also looking pretty bad for attending. That being said pretty much every con is cringy af if you look around just have to accept some people are going to be like that and there is also a good side to the cons.

It looks cringy as fu*k.

I do agree that it looks a little questionable. I'd honestly only go for merchandise, I avoid cosplay, as I'm somewhat of a perfectionist about costume, and the look of the person in the costume. But the fans must be free to dress as the characters they choose, so I just keep quiet and try not to judge. We all are dorky enough as it is, and added guilt trips are never appreciated!! lol

^,^ it's a lot of fun! Yaoi-con has been around since 2001! I usually find a few things to buy. However, if you want deals I find way more things online. I go for the inspiration where I see something there and then check online to see if it cheaper lol. Sometimes dealers are just trying to move their products along and sell stuff for really low pricing on the last day. If you want to get in for free or at a reduced price I suggest volunteering for a few hours 7 or 12 for a free pass. You can become a staff member if you do 20 hours. I can't make it this year since I went to the Anime expo in LA and will be going to comic-con San Diego (too many conventions ) hopefully I can attend next year~

It's a fun convention. I've gone every year since 2014. YaoiCon has been cancelled in 2018, so hopefully they'll bring it back in 2019. It'll depend on DMP's financial status as the con is being run by them.

Definitely recommend attending the Bingo and Auction. The closing ceremonies are fun too. Some years it pays to go as a VIP (like 2017), and others, the VIP perks are vey lackluster (2016).

Hi Akage! Do you know why this year's YaoiCon was cancelled? Like @PrinceNerin, It's my first time to know about this, and I must say I feel disappointed to learn about its cancellation this year.

I went to Yaoi Con in 2011 (my god, time flies, that was 8 years ago) when it was in Burlingame. I heard it moved and haven't paid much attention to it since and haven't looked it up in ages- but my experience of the event completely surprised me.
Personally, I don't have any interest in Yaoi myself, and I usually thought of Yaoi Con as one of the last places I'd be stoked to visit.
What got me to go initially was a business opportunity, I am highly active in the convention industry and wanted to make more contacts there. I was also managing a friend's public figure career (long story there) and we were suggested by staff of another con to enter him into the infamous Yaoi Con Auction for some extra exposure. I don't know if they still do that, but they auction cosplayers off on stage who lightly strip or do gigs while people bid real money on them for a date that takes place for a few hours just afterward.
It was a wild time too. Even Byakuya's Seiyuu from Bleach was present and the entite media team bid like $8 grand on him. He even took off his Jacket and some lady bid like several grand on it as well. The money goes to the con, but there are people who walk up and put money in the cosplayer's garments on stage and the cosplayers get to keep it, like strippers lol. I think my friend made like $400 bucks easy in like 15 minutes or less.

Anyways, what I discovered was that Yaoi Con was an 18+ convention, which added a level of 'maturity' I guess, to the overall surroundings. I say that with quotes because, well, not everyone always acts their age. But when I was there, it did actually add to the air that there wasn't much of the more energetic/hyper/sugar rush/loud type of young attendees you sometimes see that are either annoying at some conventions or misbehaving/littering/causing drama. Not saying all do that.

Overall my wild imaginations and lack of research of the event caused my initial misplaced ideas of what kind of homo erotic sex den I would be entering was turned upside down completely. Instead I found a really chill scene of fans and cosplay just like any other convention, a vendor's room, panels and events, and some unique content like Yaoi Con's bingo, auction, and the fact that the vendor's room featured the usual types of anime merch, but also had some Yaoi, though not nearly as much as I'd think. The cosplay was mixed but I noticed some tended to be from Yaoi series I was unfamiliar with, often female cosplayers crossplaying as male pairs, and also plenty of usual cosplay from all types of anime, manga, and games as well was present.
Another thing, and I only attended one Yaoi Con so I don't know if this was special then or if its still this way- the con tended to be an excellent place for BJD owners (Ball Jointed Dolls) mostly, rather than Dollfie Dreams. There seemed to be several doll shops and also meetups taking place there. Honestly, it made sense to me, seeing that a large percentage of BJD owners I used to know were female with a lot of male dolls who were usually role played together, may have had artwork done together, or whatnot. Many of the owners also claiming to be fujoshi.
Yaoi Con also held a big Rocky Horror Picture Show live event which was my first experience there after I arrived and got registered. It was my first time actually seeing it, and also the very first time I got hit in the head with a flying condom. It was 'tropical flavored', at least it said so on the package.

I was still really surprised though at how chill the event was, and my takeaway from it all was seeing how an 18+ convention felt, getting a different experience from a con that was nearly the same as other cons with the added Yaoi features, male guests from Yaoi and non-Yaoi anime, and merch, while also being another in Cali's illustrious convention circuit and still running into folks I'd always see at other cons too, it wasn't a bad experience at all even for a non-Yaoi fan. Would I go again? Probably not unless for business, since there are so many events and this one is usually out of the way for me, not to mention my lack of interest in Yaoi, and I don't go to cons just to go.
But I'll always admit I was positively surprised, and learned I shouldn't have judged it so hard initially by the name, something I have no interest in, since it sounds like it may be locked to one single subject, Yaoi.
