If I can reasonably do something myself, i do. If for no better reason than because I know what I want and to save myself the hassle of scheduling around other peoples' schedules. Most all of my landscaping and gardening I do myself. Minor interior fixes and car maintenance I try to do myself when I can get away with it.

I've never done anything myself since I'm a useless parasite that leeches off the people around me.

I've helped my dad remodel our old house since I was like 6 or 7 years old. During High School, I helped him run wiring, put up drywall, and build a deck, when we built our new house. Right now we are almost done with redoing his deck. We are taking all the old boards out, and replacing it, with the composite zero maintenance stuff. We also built a shed ourselves, and next we will have to build a playground set for my Niece and Nephew.

I also work on my car from time to time. Lately I've been too lazy, or don't have time to fix it. So I just take it in, and have someone else do it.

Yes I painted my room and assembled all the furniture so I think that must count for something.

I enjoy DIY sometimes. The first time I moved into my own place it was exciting. I got to paint, put up shelves, do furniture upholstery, change the kitchen worktop and build in the bedroom wardrobe as well as do parquet wood flooring. After a few years when it was time for redecoration it was ok then after a the 3rd time it became a chore . It's the beginning of holiday time. Maintenance time again, this time the floor needs sanding and revarnishing, so does the dining table, the hall way needs painting, new curtains need sewing. After that I get to go on my proper holiday.

DIY is entirely a cost benefit analysis for me. Is it something relatively small, relatively cheap? Outsourced. My time's worth something.

Is it hugely expensive, do I have the time and resources to do it myself? No brainer.

Is it something I cant troubleshoot but I can repair myself? Outsource troubleshooting, repair it myself.

Is it something that's my own idea that's unlike any design I can find anywhere? Now there's the money maker.

My grandfather owned his own roofing and siding business for 75 years. I worked jobs with him as a kid/teenager. I've kept up those skills. I repair and install my own roofing and siding. My father was a carpenter. I only knew him for about 2-3 years before he passed away. I went on 15-20 odd jobs with him. I got taught a few things by him too. Mostly basics on framing and restoration (since these were the jobs he took me on).

I can do an array of various things when it comes to DIY. It's just....... well, like some have said said.. time is precious. I happen to pay for basic installations because it's not something that I feel like I want to waste my time on. But if it's a project I'm undertaking, I'll do it on my own.
